Unsure if RSJ fitted correctly - metallic noise if kids jump

We have a single storey rear extension, open plan kitchen. There are 2 RSJ's fitted in a T shape - a 4.9m (203x203x52 UC) supporting the length of the back bedroom and a 2.65m (203x203x46 UC) supporting the width of the back bedroom. The smaller one should have been bolted into the middle of...

    suspended wood floor in extension

Am I correct in understanding that a suspended wood floor (in my extension) must have concrete oversite underneath? What are the ramifications If this wasn't done? Is it something LABC would have inspected on a Building Notice? Thanks a lot.

Help! RSJs in extension not inspected by BC, yet signed off!

Hello again - yes, yet another post in my long-running saga of disasters caused by my cowboy contractor. I discovering that the RSJ fitted in my dining room was fitted very badly (no calcs, beam too small, no padstones, piers too narrow). So I worried that the 2 steels fitted by same...

Momentary drop in tap pressure at 2.45am

Last night, at 2.45am I happened to be up (dont ask, late night) and noticed that the pressure from all taps in the house was very low...not much more than a weak dribble... After about 5 mins of being worried I suddenly heard the WC cistern filling up, and checked and all taps were fine again...

Discovered that Extension wall is single skin...

as i thought. oh well, better just sit tight and hope for the best. if and when the units come crashing down i'll have to think then about ripping up the whole wall and putting wood behind the units instead.

Other than that, Noseall, what is your opinion of single skin walls? (bearing in mind my other post you commented on)

How to detect presence of RSJ?

Thanks noseall. I called LABC today who said that they never received any Engineers Calcs for the RSJ's (I have copies of some Calcs which seem to relate to my extension) and therefore have no notes of any RSJs being inspected!! That said, the chap i spoke to thought that their inspector...

How to detect presence of RSJ?

I want to confirm that Cowboy builders fitted a (suitable) steel where they said they did. The steel should be under the rear-facing wall of a back bedroom, above our extended open-plan kitchen. I do have the LABC Completion Certificate, but the application was done on a Building Notice...

Discovered that Extension wall is single skin...

Thanks for the informative, helpful response. I had 2 concerns: insulation, and support of cupboards. I see you have answered both. I dont think there were any battens, at least I can't be sure there were any. However, we have been told by carpenters currently working in the kitchen that...

Discovered that Extension wall is single skin...

...of breezeblocks, then my builders had put Kingspan insulation, then plasterboard, onto which they've hung the cupboards. I can only imagine they did this to save money/time. Are there any concerns I should have about it being done this way, as opposed to double skin with cavity...

How to remove messy waterproof roof compound from rooflights

Does anyone know of a solvent, or other chemical, (avail from Screwfix/B&Q/Wickes etc) I could use to remove Flexacryl and other similar waterproof compounds from my rooflights? (At the same time i obviously want to be careful not to damage the rooflights.) Thanks a lot.

Rooflight noisy in rain and hot in sun

We've got a large rooflight (2.5 x 3.5 m) in our morning room, made from polycarbonate. When it rains heavily, the noise is something dreadful, and when it's a hot day, it's baking hot underneath! I'm considering putting a false ceiling underneath it to reduce the noise and glare. Ideally it...

Anything illegal about 'outing' a cowboy builder on the net?

Thanks Philip. Builder did threaten legal action, but I believe he was bluffing. In any case, I'm trying a different tack with him, so the whole website thing may not be necessary anymore,.

    Best sealant?

Glazing firm left a gap inside, where windows meet the wall. About 3mm wide and up to 2cm deep. There's a whooshing sound when it's windy and a slight breeze. Any tips what's the best stuff to use to seal it? (available from e.g. Screwfix, B&Q etc)
