    Safety re new boiler

Thanks Mikey. Glad to know I don't need an oxygen mask and the solution is a simple one! Re the splutering, I don't know the answer re pressure as I didn't turn the water off. However, I'll try turning the water off by the mains stopcock, make sure all the taps are drained and then turning on...

    Safety re new boiler

Morning All, A new combi boiler has been installed on the ground floor. The vent is on a south wall at the side of the house well above head height. Trouble is that the prevailing wind is a south-westerly, the vent produces clouds of vapour and whenever I am at the side of the house I get a...

    Tracks for sliding wardrobe doors

Fazq01, I got the 3607 tracks and doors from Homebase and the guy who fitted them said the tracks were Stanley, so you may want to double check. In the end I got four 762 doors and one 610 mirror door. They make a perfect fit and look great. It was a good solution as I didn't want all...

    Tracks for sliding wardrobe doors

Yup, you're right Aunsh. I've remeasured the space - with help, good job it's not me doing it! - and I obviously misheard what my mate the installer told me, it's nearer 3600mm. It'll have to be 4 at 762mm (5 will just bust the space available) with fill-ins either end and at the top, so am now...

    Tracks for sliding wardrobe doors

I'm planning to have a wardrobe run of 5 sliding doors each 726 mm wide. The total length of the wall is 3800mm. Are there any tracks long enough to take all the doors, or will they have to be split so that 3 doors slide on one track and 2 doors on another track? Thanks in anticipation.

    Chimney dust

West Sussex? Nope, but a bit close for comfort! Thanks both for a potential (cheaper) solution. I didn't think of a chimney sweep, not realising that they'd have an expertise beyond sweeping. Shame on me. Let's hear it for the sweeps!

    Chimney dust

Since forever a dry fine golden dust has to be swept off the hearth every day. My parents had a new fireplace installed in the 1960s (!). It was never used for coal fires, they just put an electric fire in the gap. As I say, the dust is dry, like very fine grain sand really. It's the same...

    New wood floor *sigh*

Hi big all, Sp0cket and Andy, Yes, it’s obviously cupping - a new word I’ve learned. And you’ve all given me a lot of food for thought. All the old floorboards were taken up and all the joists replaced. Then boarding was laid on top of the joists. It looked like hardboard rather than...

    New wood floor *sigh*

Thanks for the info. The builder got someone (a mate) in to lay the floor -although the man was basically a carpenter he had laid floors before. I paid £31 per pack (1 sqm) for the flooring (reduced from £49). It's a complete run from the back wall of the old sitting room through to the...

    New wood floor *sigh*

It squeaks, it doesn't look level and the builder doesn't want to know. It's a new solid oak T&G floor. Here goes: The back room has been extended. New joists were laid in the old room and in the new extension. On top of the joists hardboard was laid and the new floorboards fixed to the...
