    Back boxes

I'm in the process of installing the back boxes in new stud walls with rigid insulation in between the battens. I'm looking to install faceplates which aren't white - stainless steel etc, so I'm concerned that if I use the dry wall boxes, there will be a white plastic rim around these faceplates...

    Acoustic plasterboard or double boarding?

This is my only consideration, where the joins will be on the two layers. I have a bare stud wall at the moment and the plasterboard will be screws into place according to where the battens are so the first layer is easy. I just need to make sure the next layer of plasterboard is screwed into...

    Acoustic plasterboard or double boarding?

Stud work is already filled with 75mm rigid insulation. But just wondering what the best option is in terms of the plastboarding

    Acoustic plasterboard or double boarding?

I have studded up the walls and soon will be plasterboarding. It's a detached building with two of its walls facing neighbouring properties. I'm trying to achieve some sound proofing, but do not want to spend hundreds in the process. I'm aware of sound and fire board and due to their dense...

    Wall or floor first

Is there any use having the boards 5mm from the floor? The layer which I'll be using on my floor is as follow: DPM 25mm rigid insulation Vapour barrier 18mm or 22mm tongue and grove or OSB 12mm laminate flooring. That can be about 5 to 6cm of flooring. I don't mind putting on the boards after...

    Wall or floor first

Does that mean the plasterboards actually sit on the floor, or does there need to be a gap between the floor and the plasterboard edge.

    Wall or floor first

In the middle of a garage conversion. Soon I'll be plasterboarding up walls. The floor is the original cement floor and I'm wondering whether the plasterboards sit on the DPC I've laid down under the batten work or does the floor come first. If it's the floor, is it up to the tongue and grove...

    Detached Garage Conversion Project

Hi All After some initial advice seeking here I thought it would be useful for me to share the progress of the project to others, hopefully to provide an insight into how it is done and some confidence building for those wanting to tackle this themselves. You can find more about the garage...

About to start garage conversion, but found a puddle of water?

As the width is 450mm I'm going to install it that most of the the membrane is up the wall beyond the brick's DPC, and overlap it with the floor DPM so there will be a continuous barrier. I bought a roll of Cromar Vent 3 for the stud-wall membrane to line the wall with.

About to start garage conversion, but found a puddle of water?

I'll have a look at what's going on on the other side tomorrow, but I may not see much. I'm not sure if there anything I can do, however; and as that side of the wall is on my neighbours land, I'm trying to refrain from making multiple visits over. I'm concerend that the amount of water...

About to start garage conversion, but found a puddle of water?

The other side is the neighbour's garden so will need to try and have a look tomorrow. It's not clear in the images, but there was a bit of mud that were the remnants of some mess we cleaned up a couple of weeks ago, you can see this on the left side next to the wall. I hope it's the mud and...

About to start garage conversion, but found a puddle of water?

I went to inspect the garage this evening just before I go and order the timber tomorrow morning and found something quite concerning - quite a fair amount of water/moist in the rear corner of the garage. I can't see where it's coming from and given the amount present (see attachments), I'm not...

Sourcing reasonably priced materials and membrance

There's a more detailed construction plan here. I have the vapour barrier figured out - it'll be taping up the joins in the foil faced insulation. It's the barrier that is stapled to the timber that is put against the brick wall. I have seen this used on some projects, but I don't know what...

Sourcing reasonably priced materials and membrance

I have my list in a spreadsheet with links to the merchants websites, prices per unit and how many I need. I'm going to do something in the middle, have 3 or 4 suppliers where the goods are cheapest and not research too deeply, especially if the supplier doesn't have the goods on their website...

Sourcing reasonably priced materials and membrance

I've priced my garage conversion to be around £3k if I was to buy the materials of local chain store merchant - I'm wondering whether anyone can advise suitable merchants who are competitive on price within the West Midlands area. Secondly, I'm trying to find a membrane that affixes to the...

Detached Garage Conversion Plans with Drawings

I've done some calculation and its best for me to use 75mm for the main stud work with 75mm insulation inbetween the battens and maintain the second layer of insulation as a vapour barrier. The brick stack is 200mm from the wall. After the 75mm stud work, I'll add 30mm barrier insulation which...

Detached Garage Conversion Plans with Drawings

Neither apply in this case as it's exempt, but I understand your point. After doing some measurements, it turns out it will be insulated via the vapour barrier insulation (the stack is smaller in width than I first thought). It's possible that if the main insulation is taped up to the battens...

Detached Garage Conversion Plans with Drawings

I want to add a second layer of foil backed insulation as the vapour barrier that needs to be screwed onto the studs so even if the studs were deeper they wouldn't be accessible via the VB. So adding that service cavity helps maitain the insulation and the VB and helps me route wires without...
