    Shower not draining

I had this until I realised that you can remove the plug hole. Sounds stupid I know but it wasn't obvious. I had to lever it out with a fork. Then I found that it had a cylindrical waste trap with a screw off bottom that was blocked full of... well...it was gross. Now I take it out once a week...

Radiator valve leak - can I stop it without draining the system?

I put the tape on and refilled the system with water. It seems to not leak if I leave the radiator off. Hopefully it will be properly fixed soon! Thank you all :)

Radiator valve leak - can I stop it without draining the system?

This is the plan (in fact to change the radiator) but in the meantime we have no heating and the plumber can't come for a couple of days. I am going to buy some PTFE tape now. I took the top nut off and I can see the spindle and a washer. Do I just wrap a string of the tape around the base of...

Radiator valve leak - can I stop it without draining the system?

I turned it as far as I could with the spanner but it stills leaks. The pressure is down at 0.3 bar. I can take water out of the system by the boiler on the return pipe (there is a sort of drain with a tap). It seems to be slowing down so hopefully it will just stop overnight or at least stay...

Radiator valve leak - can I stop it without draining the system?

@terryplumb @kidgreen61 I got the plastic part off and it looks like this. I don't have a header tank. Just the boiler which has a small tank built into it. The pressure is still over 1 bar in the central heating system. Any tips? I don't have any PTFE tape either :(

Radiator valve leak - can I stop it without draining the system?

I did try this but I couldn't get it off. There is a hole in the top.but it doesn't look like a screw. More like something you would put a hex? tool in. I am out at the minute but will try again in an hour when I get back. Thank you!

Radiator valve leak - can I stop it without draining the system?

Hi all, The radiator valve just gave up and started leaking heavily. I have been waiting for the plumber to come for a few weeks. The central heating is off and I closed the flow and return valves on the boiler. However the leak is still enough that it will overflow a washing up bowl...

Bathroom layout - concrete floor and waste connection

@StephenStephen I've always steered away from any jobs that require artistic talent! I will take a photos and make a plan that is safe to read ;) I think my question is really about the shower waste/plinth height and how to route the pipes. Thank you!

Bathroom layout - concrete floor and waste connection

Hi all, We are creating a bathroom and bedroom in what was previously a kitchen diner on the ground floor of our house. I attached a (badly drawn) plan of what we plan to do here. The floor is concrete and we absolutely do not want to break it up in any way for various reasons. The house is...

    Quandary about bathroom

I live in France. Almost everybody has their washing machine and dryer in the bathroom and think it is weird to bring dirty clothes into the kitchen where you cook food :) Generally they are stacked with the dryer on top of the washing machine, sometimes with a pull out shelf between the two...

Wood balcony rails peels every year

Thank you all. I think I will go with putting a strip on top. In this case, do I do something like sand the existing rail flat, put glue between the strips and then nail them together? Do I need to seal on the vertical faces between the original wood and the strip? I don't know why it got wet...

Wood balcony rails peels every year

Hi all, We have a small.balcony rail that dates from the 1970s and has a wood top bar over a metal frame. We varnish/stain/treat the wood every year, and by July it has peeled off. It is heavily cracked and the cracks are quite deep in places. It also faces south and is in the sun all day and...

Groundwater leaking into soil pipe, possibly

Good luck! Mine was brown for about a month (I did the same test with the jar) and it wasn't sediment or algae, and it did clear eventually. Just in case - be careful adding chlorinated water from the tap. I made this mistake just after it had finally cleared and it killed off all the good...

Groundwater leaking into soil pipe, possibly

For the pond, if you leave it long enough and throw in some Denitrol or similar, plus some plants, it will clear after about a month :). Then it will go green for a bit and eventually calm down. I assume it is new? In this case it is normal to go through this stage. Every time you add new...

    Terraced loft rat issues

Our neighbours had a similar problem, but coming up through the drains. They sealed everything off with mesh etc but they still made their way in. It only stopped once the property next door dealt with the issue. If they don't respond you can always contact the Environmental Health department...

    Leak from channel or render?

To close this completely. The walls are now done. A previous repair on the gable end was done using silicone in the cracks, hence the leak. There were quite deep holes to be filled with cement and then it was properly primed, followed by the crepi. The colour is a bit different (I already tried...

Hydropliolite paint direct onto concrete walls

Hi all, We are currently having the blown crepi on our house repaired. The house is concrete construction and has a thin layer of a type of crepi followed by paint (sorry, I don't know what crepi is in English, I am in France). The builders have scraped off the loose crepi, and opened out any...

Old fluorescent light - do they have starters?

I got a new tube and it works in one of the two slots, so there is life in it yet. When we redo the room we will change it but for now it lives on. Thanks all!

Combi boiler in loft - wasting loads of cold water on tap in ground floor

We have a similar issue for the shower and we just run it into a bucket until it is st temperature, then either use it straight away on the garden or, if we don't need it, put it in a water butt in the garden for later. It balances out as we turn don't run the tap for watering the garden or...

Old fluorescent light - do they have starters?

Thank you all. The black cylinders in the end are glass and are wound with wire (I assume this is what @ericmark was meaning). I didn't mess about much with them but I couldn't see how they obviously came out. I was tempted to buy a new tube and see, and I think I will, because the fitting is...
