Concrete pumping in Northern Ireland? RoI? Use a Dumper Instead?

Contacted a supplier of concrete pumps in Ireland and they have sold 2 in the North, both of which are used by piling companies for their own work so not for hire. So now I'm left with forking out £480 for a boom pump, or 2 dump trucks at £100 a day. Was thinking I could place the rebar into...

Concrete pumping in Northern Ireland? RoI? Use a Dumper Instead?

That's the job alright! Phoned up FIVE local concrete pumping companies in the Yellow Pages and the lowest quote so far was £480 for a days hire of a 30m boom system. I doubt it would even fit into my street along with the mixer lorry. My curtain twitching pensioner neighbours would have a...

Concrete pumping in Northern Ireland? RoI? Use a Dumper Instead?

I’m building a double garage / shed at the back of my house which will be 65’ (20m) from the main road with access through a ‘drive through’ garage (door at either end). I need 6m3 of concrete in the new garage base and I will only have 4 people total to do the labour and...

DPC when returning and keying garage door brickwork?

Cavity closer it is - reading up on the web, 'toothing' bricks in isn't the done thing unless it's a freestanding pier between garage doors. Cavity closer solves all my problems with vertical DPC and insulation.

DPC when returning and keying garage door brickwork?

I'm cutting the back out of my attached garage to make it a 'drive through' and the BCO has been out to OK things. There will be 450mm of internal blockwork left between the new door and the corner, which complies with the 390mm minimum dimension. When we talked about finishing off the...

Lifting a lintel with a Genie Lift - no room for legs?

Got a rough cost this morning to visit and do calcs for a steel beam from 2 local SEs - cheapest was £120. The lintel is straight from the concrete supplier, so it's £30 all in. Genie will cost me £50 for a full days use so going the steel route just isn't worth the hassle and extra cost...

Lifting a lintel with a Genie Lift - no room for legs?

I completely agree, but my helpful BCO pointed out that the front door has a 2440mm x 175 x 100mm lintel over it and if I copy the structure at the front, I don't need SE calcs. It's supporting all the same loads. He also suggested 175mm is too small for the opening - 215mm would be a better...

Lifting a lintel with a Genie Lift - no room for legs?

    Dimensions are 2700 x 215 x 100mm - prestressed. Opening width is 2280mm (for 7' door).

Lifting a lintel with a Genie Lift - no room for legs?

Worked it out that it will weigh 145kg... The lintel will be going in at 10' high, so even standing on trestles it would be a stretch...

Lifting a lintel with a Genie Lift - no room for legs?

I'm taking out the back of my attached garage to add a rear door. There's a 10' high block wall supporting the roof and a brick outer wall which isn't supporting anything. My plan was to have the lintel sitting at the base of the wall, support the roof joists above with acrow props, then...

Blocking up window over garage door

    Awesome - thanks guys! :)

Blocking up window over garage door

It's a double skin garage, but the external brick is completley absent where the garage door and window is. Above the window there's a huge lintel on the inside block wall which supports the joists (and roof) above. If I wanted to use PVC cladding above the door, like this: Can I just...

Blocking up window over garage door

I have an attached garage which has a large double glazed window above the door. I'd like to remove the window and block up the space, without going to the expense and hassle of using brick. What can I do? The space is roughly 3' x 7' and I'd like it to look good from the outside so thinking...

    Moving CH pipework underground

Thanks for the reply! Stupid question, but I take it when you use the rest bend you'd just install the plastic pipe with no elbow joint? Is HEP a better choice than speedfit for CH? Pipe is currently 22mm copper, clipped to the wall which is going to be removed. Changing to plastic...

    Moving CH pipework underground

What about digging out the trench, laying 50mm kingspan into it - floor and sides - installing all the pipework where I can see/get to it easily, then 50mm kingspan lid to close it all off, and concrete on top? Bound to be more thermally efficient as well as giving me better access while I'm...

    Moving CH pipework underground

I have an attached garage which has a utility area at the back of it, separated by a freestanding block wall (not supporting anything) and a doorway into the garage. I’m taking the wall down to free up more space in the garage and eventually let me knock through the back to make a ‘drive through...

30m² Internal Area (Building Regs) and Studwork

"Finished internal face" apparently refers to whatever covering you put on the internal face of the wall, so if you build it out of block, you can finish by just painting, plastering, plasterboard, studwork and sheet, whatever. I think the concern for BC is that 30m² is a reasonable amount...

30m² Internal Area (Building Regs) and Studwork

That's a really good point on it being freestanding. At the minute, my design has a steel brace running around the tops of the posts made from 100mm equal angle. That also acts as a wallplate for the trusses to sit on. I could build an internal wooden frame so that it supports the trusses...

30m² Internal Area (Building Regs) and Studwork

I'm planning a double garage/workshop in my back garden which will meet all of the planning permission regs, but to save me the hassle of complying with building regs (most of it will), I want to keep the internal area below 30m2. I have a prefab post and panel type concrete garage which I'm...
