    Noisy Boiler

Morning all and thanks for the replies. The latest in that BG returned yesterday evening and at first he said it was the heat exchanger,,, but then decided the pump was faulty due to sludge so replaced it. The noise is still there when the boiler starts, but at least she has heat again while...

    Noisy Boiler

Nickso About a year ago she had a similar problem except the noise was different. Then it was like a hot sizzling frying pan noise, this noise was more like a coffee grinder. I've looked at the report and last time they said it was limescale and put an inhibitor into the system which cured...

    1987 XJ6 brakes

Thanks for this, I since learnt that he only had the front pads replaced as he was convinced the rear ones were OK. He hardly uses the car now so when he has the rear checked it will hopefully be OK.

    Noisy Boiler

Hi All, My sisters boiler had started to make a grinding noise when it was first turned on,,,, but after a few minutes it performed normally. She has a contract with British Gas and the engineer called, got a foot-pump out and said 'the cylinder was empty',,, or words similar. But when he...

    ITV & C4 Reception problems.

Hi all, Progressively over the last few months I have reception problems receiving ITV and Channel 4, but can receive BBC and ITV 2+1 OK. Sometimes there is minor interference and sometimes the signal is so scrambled the screen is a mess, or just blank, with a note saying 'No' or 'Bad...

    Manhole covers

Tony, So how many dwellings in London are not 'shared' drains!!!!?? Was it not a fair assumption given my location that others would be on the same line? To proceed without prior knowledge of the regulations is foolhardy advise,,, and not an option.

    Manhole covers

Hello Onetap, Your initial reply did not distinguish between a public and a private sewer, you just said it wasn't allowed, and others have disagreed. I think the criteria as to what I can do may depend on whether the sewer is private or publicly owned. I assume that if the chamber became...

    wiring type

Can you safely see if the conductors are 'tinned'? This will confirm that it is not a PVC cable but TRS (Tough Rubber Sheath) who's sheath will not be so tough now an should be replaced as it is well passed it's sell by date.

    Landlords slot meters

Do you know if this the 'plunger' type pneumatic switch which can be wedged in the 'on' position, or does it trigger a remote timer?

    Landlords slot meters

I'm not sure if the latest design of pneumatic switches are better, but tenants sometimes wedge them 'on' with matchsticks and the like, so looking for something they can't tamper with, which is why I'm leaning towards sensors. Also no pull cord in the bathroom which is a bonus. Health a...

    Landlords slot meters

Thanks for the info,,, I guess for three units perhaps not worth the investment, but if you have a link to a supplier I would check it out. Cheers

    Landlords slot meters

A friend wants to rent his house out by dividing it into three different 'studios', and wants each tenant to pay for their power. I assume coin operated slot meters are still the best way to do this, if so, which are the best 'tamper free' brands to buy? He also wants to put sensors to the...

    Manhole covers

Me again guys, Seems I have been misinformed, as 'batman' can indeed enter a bedroom with an internal manhole as I've been informed that it is permissible.!!?

    Electrical supply for garage

Ericmark, I've tried to avoid using a genny if possible, I would consider perhaps a small 'standby' genny for emergency backup, but prefer to install a system that is more 'independent'. I'm also going to install skylights in the roof to maximise natural light, so fluros should only be needed in...
