10mm Steel Wire Armour cable to man cave

Sunray, in another thread you’ve just posted a long story highlighting the incompetence of some “professional” electricians; I think it’s legitimate to ask “is this right?” in this case. Sure there may be reasons for not using the armour as the earth but it’s also possible that it’s being done...

    Click engineered floor questions

Yes! Edit: measure the room, you will need to cut the last row of boards to fit. It doesn’t have to be perfectly symetrical, but do work it out so you don’t end up needing a tiny sliver.

Door handle retention screws - Why so bad?

Yes! Yes. This is essential, if you don’t have some other gadget to make the hole straight. Make sure you agree about which way is up and which is down.

It’s easier inserting the tongue into the groove, not trying to fit the groove around the tongue.

    Socket cables in insulation

Wrong order. Replace the consumer unit first. Then you’ll be protected by the RCD while you do the other works. Is there anything wrong with the conduit wiring? Any significant rust or other problems? No need to replace it otherwise. (I live in a similar property, with singles in conduit...

    Socket cables in insulation

Fuses in 2025 !? Upgrade soon. Do you have an RCD? Are they re-wireable fuses, i.e. you can fix them with fusewire, or are they cartridges, somewhat like appliance plug fuses? 30A fuse with 6mm cable can be installed by methods 100 and 102 only if you have a cartridge fuse, not a rewirable...

    Insulating my ancient living room

(3 months later…) I have a load of plasterboard coming tomorrow, so I thought I’d better post some photos before this gets hidden forever. This is the same right-hand window as before, with insulated studwork in place. It doesn’t look as smart as my previous efforts, because I’m re-using the...

    Asbestos or not?

One of the most ridiculous posts ever. Regarding the question in the last line - you would certainly have disposed of it responsibly, because if you hadn’t you would have faced a business-ending fine. No, there is zero possibility that a property built in 2020 by a housing association - not...

Heat Loss - Pen & Paper Check

It’s amazing how often radiators seem to come in a bazillion varieties but never exactly what you need. Stelrad tripples seem to come in 300, 500 and 600 high, but not 400. Does anyone else make them? Edit: how would 500 work out for you?

Removal of radiator no bleed valve

Clearly running for 15 minutes is far more than the contents of that little radiator. Note that your system is now full of fresh water, and no inhibitor chemicals. When you’ve finished you will need to add new inhibitor. Presumably one or other valve is not closed. Have you turned the...

Which type switch do I need?

It looks to me like it pinged out when he opened it. Good point; they seem to be present at the intermediate switch but possibly cut off at the other switch. @paulfoel , please investigate the earth wires. Do you know if you have earths present at the light fittings?

Which type switch do I need?

Errrr…. yes you’re right, I managed to imagine a scenario where it would short, but it was a flight of fancy.

Which type switch do I need?

You might find it challenging to get the wires in the right holes in the new intermediate switch, as the old one looks unusual. You have four wires from two cables. In most intermediate switches, the wires from one cable go in the pair of holes at the top of the switch and the wires from the...

Replacing ceiling light, confused by wiring

Ah, that makes sense! I was trying to read it as all sorts of things. Still wrong - and yes it doesn’t matter in the sense of no electrocution risk here, but still a sign of some historical incompetence. I’m not sure I’d recommend getting an electrician to inspect. It’s time consuming for them...

Replacing ceiling light, confused by wiring

Done by the same person who just twisted the earth wires together. Assume everything is wrong. Might be wise to inspect the whole property looking especially for missing earths. Get a cheapo socket tester. Edit: I see there is no bit of tape saying “live” in the latest photo??
