    Fixing phone dropwire to wall.

Wow, the things you learn from an obviously knowledgable person. I've said it before on these forums and I'll say it again, guys like me with only a smattering of general DIY experience are greatly indebted to Lectrician and all the rest who give up their time (on a Saturday too!)to pass on...

    Fixing phone dropwire to wall.

Sorry, back again. Are the 3 yellow wires used as the line support, then the 4 phone wires taken into the house?.

    Fixing phone dropwire to wall.

Puzzle solved!. There should be a plain straining wire alongside the drop cable from the pole but the straining wire is missing. Thanks again.

    Fixing phone dropwire to wall.

Many thanks, It's possibly an older type cable as it has separate green, white, orange and black wires. It's at a friends house, just moved in. The cable is lying on the ground and she'd like it fixed up on the end of the house. I'm looking for the insulator type of thing I see on other houses...

Hi, What is a phone dropwire fixed to at the house end of the line from the pole? And how is it fixed? The cable has the 3 yellow strain wires in it.

Hi, I fancied some Magnet doors but found they are trade only suppliers.I've come across a site for "Top Class Carpentry" who apparently sell Magnet doors retail. Any comments on this business please?.

    Plasterboard gaps at joins.

Thanks for that encouraging info. The plasterer has had a preliminary look at the job and is coming back to price it up when all the boarding is done, so he will be able to see then what extra prep is needed. Thanks again.

    Plasterboard gaps at joins.

Hi, I'm plasterboarding in a house we're renovating for retirement and have been laid up for a week with post herpetic neuralgia (shingles without the blisters, hellish painful!). My two sons in law have been "helpful" and done some boarding during this time but, without wishing to sound...

    Strapping a wall,

That seems eminently sensible!. I've just been faffing around looking for something to hold the first vertical 2x2 in place while I mark and drill. I have some 4x2s the right length so that's just what I'm off to do. Thanks again.

    Strapping a wall,

Many thanks for that, 4x2 sounds good as they seem to be pretty poor 1930s bricks. :)

    Strapping a wall,

Hi, I have to strap and plasterboard this previously external wall. How close should I go to the edge of the knock-through with the 2x2s, using hammerfixings, without risking the bricks crumbling. And bearing in mind that the door frame will also need to be fixed on the end of the wall.

Height of door opening (knock through)

P.S. Just managed to steal 15mm more by removing the old render from the lintel ingo. :)

    Bead blasting.

Does anyone have any experience of glass bead blasting with the small cabinets available from Machine Mart and the like?. I've used an Ace grit blaster for years with my 14cfm compressor and am wondering if DIY bead blasting would give good quality results on alloy motorbike parts.

Height of door opening (knock through)

Thanks, that sounds eminently sensible!. It will be vinyl on both floors so that saves a few mm.

Height of door opening (knock through)

Hi, My working drawings say "alter existing window opening to form new door opening". (Into new extension). My architect is away for a fortnight. The height from new floor to bottom of existing window lintel measures 203cm at one window and 205cm at the other. Is there a minimum or standard...

    Reveal query.

Thanks again. I can't really see what's holding the window frame in but presumably (hopefully!) there are hidden fixings.
