Isolated DAMP issue on front elevation 1875 mid terrace (Yorkshire)

Just to chuck my two twopenn'orth in. Rusty gives some great advice so worth following his recommendations. My house is of very similar if not the same construction (West Yorkshire). I’ve spent years of research to concluded that modern materials and methods are not compatible with the...

    floor insulation construction suggestions

just to come back to this ive wacker plated the rubble that surrounds the cellar ceiling and levelled to it. ive then added a sand binding layer, a DPM and then cellotex insulation. I reduced my cellotex from 100mm to 80mm as discussed as im short on space to get back to a level with other...

    Wood Burner or Boiler stove?

Had a good read and watched the video. Seems like a good idea to recover extra heat (if you don’t mind the hiss) . Sadly it can’t force any heat into other rooms

    Wood Burner or Boiler stove?

As part of my renovation ive removed the old wood burner to be able to repair the fireplace etc. I have the opportunity to run wet UFH pipes while the floor is up and insulation is going down rather than leaving the existing rad on the wall. Ive been doing some basic research about wood burners...

Plasterboard with insulation / vapour barrier

Yep my thoughts exactly. I like the idea of the service batons too. Re the ventilation. I have planned to implemented a cellar system that pushes air out of the air brick. it has a humidistat and will reverese if the external air is less humid. It was something id seen Peter Ward of Heritage...

Plasterboard with insulation / vapour barrier

Thanks for the detailed info. As part of my own reading I had also read suggestions that use breathable martierials to allow moisture in and out via capillary action. As you rightly pointed out, this can introduce other problems and challenges. An alternative to doing this is to use model with...

Plasterboard with insulation / vapour barrier

Very informative and helpful. Thanks both. To clarify am I missing anything in my construction? VLC and vapour Membrane has been mentioned. My construction is Original solid wall -> VCL -> Insulation (that possibly includes the VCL) -> Plasterboard (that possibly includes the insulation and...

    Repair cellar stone ceiling

It never rains does it. Lol. So as part of my project to insulate the floor. I got down as low as the cellar cieling. 200mm approx. Just as I’m ready to do the sand blinding, a section of the cellar roof gave way. See pics. This section was 2 1/4” thick. All the other sections are 3 1/2”...

Plasterboard with insulation / vapour barrier

Yeh im not sure you need a cavity? Everything I’ve read suggests that you just need VCL.

Plasterboard with insulation / vapour barrier

Thanks for the suggestions. It’s an old house… over 200 years so walls are solid. Previous owner dot dabbed plaster board to the cold wall with no barrier or insulations. I places the board was soggy when I took it off. I want to do it right. My research concluded that a barrier is a must to...

    undersized joists in old house

Thanks for the detailed response. I think the first reaction is to look at the size and assume they are too small by modern standards but as you and others have suggested the old wood was slow grown and much better strength. I’ve got the wife to gently bounce above and it’s the joist not the...

Plasterboard with insulation / vapour barrier

Morning all. Ordinarily I’d make a stud wall. Fill with celotex cover with a Vapor barrier and board over. But a local builder suggested just to ‘dot dab’ pre insulated boards to the wall. My first though was that they wouldn’t stick very well. But could be mechanically fixed. That said what...

    floor insulation construction suggestions

Yeh I thought the slab could do with being thicker. It did make me laugh when taking up the previous screed that whoever laid it and incoperated chicken wire to strengthen it. It had pretty much rusted away. I’m on with finishing the floor dig today and tidying up ready for sand. I don’t think...

    undersized joists in old house

Why’s that? It’s not going to stop it flexing. And will add a lot of weight. It’s will stop lateral movement but that’s not the issue. The joists are pocketed into the walls. But not notched that side. I was thinking more on the beam side

    undersized joists in old house

Because the existing are notched over the beam. So half the thickness is missing. As such may also be probe to snapping off rendering the sister useless. Unless you can suggest something else?

    undersized joists in old house

not bother with hangers on the big beam at all?
