How would you set 4x4” Pergola posts to last ?

In concrete they seem to rot at the concrete/soil interface and then be a pain to replace. Met-posts can be unsightly and rust away. Toying with the idea of a buried block of concrete with a bolt down met-post fitting on top (just below soil level), then which ever rust/rots can be replaced...

decking, protecting posts and joining joists.

I’ve an 8 x 7 mtr area to deck between a house wall and a parallel garden wall, raised on legs from 6” to 12 “ I could make 4 frames and bolt them together but I was thinking of scarf jointing 7 mtr lengths of 6 x2 joists with a post leg either side of the joint, plus all the appropriate...

decking, protecting posts and joining joists.

how do you experts, 1) protect the end grain on decking posts resting on concrete/block ? Is there something more/better than just brushing with preservative? 2) Join joist on a long run. Assuming its glue and screw does something like 'no nails' cope better than waterproof wood glue? regards,

    Splitter wall plate?

Plugwash, Just a thought, could I fit a deep dual face plate and hide a conventional splitter behind one half, connect one ‘split feed’ to the other half of the dual face place, the other ‘split feed’ connected to the second cable leading to location 2? I fear it may be tight for space. It...

    Splitter wall plate?

Silverlight: yes it is odd, I think it was a well intentioned DIY’er who then ran up against the same problem I have. Plugwash: until I find a better way (and there probably isn’t !!) your “loop” method will be the answer. Thanks for all replies

    Splitter wall plate?

Thanks Eric, I understand what your saying but what I’m wanting to do is get the second faceplate to work by joining or splitting it from the first faceplate. The coax is in place I just don’t know a way of making the connection. I want to move telly, set box etc. to the other side of the...

    Splitter wall plate?

I have 2 single satellite wall plates in one room, one works fine the other doesn’t. On removing the working wall plate I find a second coax cable (unconnected) running to the second wall plate. Is there a way to split/join/ extend the first wall plate to the second? I would like to use the...

What to seal an internal stone wall with.

Searches on here and Google didn’t provide an answer, can someone suggest a way of sealing an internal stone wall (made from granite, sandstone, flint) to stop dust from generating from the stone and mortar? Dilute matt varnish didn’t look right on a sample area so that’s been wire brushed off...

    What adhesive for stone slips?

Ok thanks for the replies, I think Thermo’s confirmation swings me to gripfill. I can see that tile adhesive would normally work but I was doubtful they would be able to hold the unconventional stone slips until set.

    What adhesive for stone slips?

I’ve uncovered an old natural stone wall in my lounge that will be make a nice focal point. Problem is a visible re-enforced concrete collar on top of the wall that was laid before a 1st floor extension was added. 6” of this collar is visible beneath the ceiling along the length of the wall...

Render over roughcast/pebbledash or knock it off?

Thanks Micilin I'll give it a go on the smallest wall and see how it looks, I can always knock it off if it doesn't look too good. I needed to to know it wasn't going to crack, box on the roughcast.

Render over roughcast/pebbledash or knock it off?

I would like a smooth/napped rendered finish to my external walls. At present these are roughcast/pebble-dashed and masonary painted. Coating is sound and stable. Does the roughcast need removing before rendering or can it be rendered over? It is very roughcast with 1/2 to 3/4" stones...
