    Second storey options.

All the work was subject to building regs. It does have an inner leaf on the 3 external walls. For the wall alongside our neighbours land (left side) the blockwork was installed on the existing surface. The front of what used to be the garage had two concrete steel reinforced lintels spanning...

So I guess that is where the test dig comes in to find out?

    Second storey options.

About 4 years ago I had a single detached garage changed to be a single storey side extension, see photos below for before and after. I now wish to extend above to make a second storey so that we can add two additional rooms - extra bedroom and a study as working from home is going to become...

Single storey to two storey side extension.

Good point, I will stay away from drawing too many comparisons. However it would perhaps be unlikely our next door neighbour or potentially any future next door neighbour would build on the pathway so potentially allowing me to go up to the boundary.

Single storey to two storey side extension.

One interesting slant to this is that a friend of mine (in the same village) had a second storey added above his 1st storey without issue without having to set back 1m at the side. Attached is a picture of what the house with a straight(ish) red line to illustrate what I mean. I also found the...

Single storey to two storey side extension.

That was a good picture to illustrate what I was thinking. The border for my property with the neighbour is a little awkward as shown in the attached... I might have to set the rear corner back so 1 metre is observed and I am looking at possibly extending both the 1st and 2nd storeys at the...

Single storey to two storey side extension.

How could things be done to support a second storey if not enough foundational support?

Single storey to two storey side extension.

I think the side window is for where the stairs are as I think it is banisters I can see and the window is quite a bit lower than the upstairs room windows.

Single storey to two storey side extension.

Thanks DevilDamo. So from what you say and I envisage the portion of the roof of the current side extension on the boundary side would remain in place and the first floor would be set in by 1 metre?

Single storey to two storey side extension.

About 4 years ago we had a single side extension that had the existing single detached garage joined to the main property as show in the attached picture. A second picture also shows the rear of the property. On the council planning pages it says "To avoid the terracing effect that...

    Motion sensor in bathroom

Not sure how easy or difficult this would be but in order to get around the issue of the bathroom light not being switched off (using a pull cord) when someone finishes using the bathroom I am exploring the idea of fitting a motion sensor in place of the pull cord. The bathroom has 3 LED...

    Brick mortar colour

I had some partial repointing done for a few bricks and whilst the new mortar looks fine the colour is slightly different. Is there something that can be done to change the colour of the mortar to match the surrounding mortar colour to blend in?

Cracking on new front extension wall

As expected no cracks in the mortar but just wondered if anyone can offer any tips to get the new mortar to match as close as possible to the pre-existing mortar as shown in the picture.

Cracking on new front extension wall

For anyone that might find it useful to know I got the repointing done and the cracked brick replaced. Since the cracking appeared around July 2017 there was no further progression of the cracking. During the long hot summer of last year I was keen to see if further cracking would happen but...

    Brickwork in the rain

To add a bit of context I have attached a picture of the hole in the wall I wish to brick up and any advice on best approach would be much appreciated.

@footprints - thanks. @^woody^ - For an amateur such as me in bricklaying I could get drenched!

    Brickwork in the rain

I will be replacing two external bricks this weekend to fill in an old tumble dryer vent and it will likely to be raining. Although the job will be fairly quick would it be a good idea to cover the new bricks once they and the mortar have been inserted? Any other things I need to be aware of?

Cracking on new front extension wall

I have had someone come around and quote me £180 to get the repointing sorted out and the cracked brick replaced. Does the price seem reasonable?

Cracking on new front extension wall

I will probably wait until early next year until I do any work but at least there has been plenty of heat so far!
