    Finding my cellar

Only history I know is that it was built around 1920-1930 by an architect who designed the entire street and this house was for him, we live right next to a railway and I've seen a really old picture in a railway book that was taken pre war. I'm assuming the ceiling would only be plasterboard...

    Finding my cellar

Nice one, we always joke that there could be millions down there lol. Would be nice if I could find out, could come in handy if it is a decent size (Which it looks according to the cellar line)

    Finding my cellar

I'm assuming this was the original entrance to the cellar, "DU" being down and up. The line to the cellar in the original drawing is still present in the new drawing so although this entrance has disappeared I'm thinking the cellar still exists as the line to the cellar has not been removed.

    Finding my cellar

In the utility the entire floor is concrete and the underneath of the stairs is in there, the bottom of the stairs is in the lounge which is carpeted, I did lift the carpet up a while ago and the area partially tiled and then the rest floor boards, couldn't see any access points then.

    Finding my cellar

Hi Moved into my house a few years back and have recently been going through some documents I found relating to the house. One of the documents is the schematics for the house as it was in 1988 and another one with proposed alterations which is how the house is now, both documents show a cellar...

    External stop cock

Had stw come and try it, they managed to fully tighten it but the upstairs tap was still dribbling out. He opened up the hex valve where you can put a water meter and said that if the stopcock was still open it would be letting water out of here now rather then going through the pipe work into...

    External stop cock

I’ve modified my key so it fits and have turned the tap clockwise 1/4 turn but it has not turned off the supply. Turned it 2 full turns and it appears to go tight, checked water but still on. The tap is catching the side so didn’t really want to keep going especially now it has gone tight using...

    External stop cock

Hi thanks for the reply, I have one of those keys but it catches the side of the hole stopping it moving, think any key would do the same. Suppose I could squeeze the ends of the key to make it smaller but still think it would catch so looks like I will have to do it by hand which might make it...

    Drilling through a wall

Cheers Ian yep will drill from outside then, would of been easy to drill crouched down in bedroom instead of up some ladders but I down want to damage the wall. Should I go though with a small drill first, I’ve got 3 cables to go through so I might make 3 small holes 10mm-14mm instead of one big one

    Drilling through a wall

This sounds like a simple question but I live in a 1930's house and in one of the rooms we have a cctv system, current camera wires go through the roof into the loft and then come down the ceiling. I had to get some guys in to do this. Want to put some more up and seen that an easier way would...

    Open fire place flue

Hi We have an open central fireplace in our lounge which we don't use as it has been disconnected and we get plenty of heat from the radiators in the room. What trademan do I need to get in to remove the flue and will it be a big job? I have removed the plastic air vent on the chimney breast in...

    Old lining paper

Hi We had wallpaper in our bedroom and wanted to have painted walls instead but to have one wall wallpapered. I have removed the wallpaper and all the backing paper and the only thing left on the walls is the lining paper. I've looked on google and majority of info is saying to remove the lining...

    Spluttering got tap

I have 1 bathroom and 1 ensuite, we used to have two taps on the basin in the ensuite and the hot tap always sputtered, both taps are now gone and replaced with a brand new mixer tap as we had a new basin and I assumed it was the old tap that was to blame but new tap still splutters when hot...

    Spluttering got tap

Hi The en suite basin hot tap splutters all the time, after a few seconds the flow is good and there is no spluttering but then as the water heats up it starts again. I have a combo boiler and this is the only tap that does it, bath hot taps in both bathroom and en suite are fine and other basin...
