    40mm Waste into Inspection Chamber

Hello I'm putting a new sink in, and can go directly through the outside wall and about 1m away from the house is an inspection chamber (foul). Is it ok to dig down and put my 40mm waste straight into this? I understand that it's got to be angled to the direction of flow, but could I break into...

Shower and Basin Waste into Existing Soil Waste

Hello As above, really. I've got a small cloakroom with an existing WC and basin, and want to move the toilet and fir a new basin and shower. There isn't a vertical stack (vent) pipe in the room, so my question is: 'Can I tee the shower & basin waste into a 40mm waste then join this to the...

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

.....regarding the last post, I've just been told by an electrician 'no sockets or plugs on a lighting circuit'. I can't quote whereabouts in the regs it says this but I obviously don't want to contravene; not quite sure where to go with this now. Is there anyone out there who could offer...

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

Thanks mfarrow - very interesting. Wiring to the junction box is my last option as it'll be inaccessible when the ceiling's up, so I think I'll go for the round pin option - at least nothing else can be plugged in to overload it.

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

.....ah right - thanks. I understand, tho, that putting a normal square pin socket in a lighting circuit wouldn't be allowed in the current regs - is this right? So how about the 5a round pin idea - simply wiring this (rp) socket from the junction box then fitting the round pin plug onto...

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

....sorry Rocky, I don't follow what you mean - could I ask you to treat me like a 12 year old in any explanation? Many thanks!

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

......hello - IS ANYBODY THERE??!! As a follow up to the question about whether a socket would comply with the regs (I've got a feeling it wouldn't), how about if I was to fit a 5a round pin socket with the appropriate plug on the lights? Would this be a goer and would it comply...

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

Again, thanks for this reply.... .....could you please tell me if both set ups would be ok regarding the regs?

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

Thanks for the reply ricicle. When you say "you will need to wire the supply as a socket", do you mean to use 1mm t&e from the junction box to the transformer (ie wire the transformer to this cable), or wire a normal (labelled) square pin socket to this cable, and plug in the light set as you...

Fairy Lights (or similar) Lights & Lighting Circuit

Hello Is it possible to wire a chain of fairy lights, or a similar light 'chain', to an existing junction box on a lighting circuit (containing the cables for power, switch and existing light fitting)? If this depends on the type of light chain, can you please give any advice regarding what...

Building Regs: New Staircase/Alteration of trimmer

That's very close to being it Tony - many thanks! Who would I get to work these figures out and put a solution together for the post, as you call it (VERY limited budget!) - and would that have to continue to the ceiling and tie up there? Thanks again!

Building Regs: New Staircase/Alteration of trimmer

...STOP PRESS!! ...you're right Woody, I did ask a similar question a while ago; this is slightly different tho!

Building Regs: New Staircase/Alteration of trimmer

Nope, not me Woody. One thing I forgot to mention (D'OH!) was that the head of the stairs will have to be set further back from the joist/beam/trimmer (thanks gregers!!) as the required headroom on the mezz isn't high enough directly above it; therefore it HAS to be cut and then supported...

Building Regs: New Staircase/Alteration of trimmer

...ok, have done a very basic sketch plan - hope this makes it a bit clearer... Not at all familiar with how to upload and show images - sorry - this is obviously the first one shown Hope it's visable! http://media.diynot.com/34000_33291_50255_93926341_thumb.jpg

Building Regs: New Staircase/Alteration of trimmer

Sorry, I know it's me not you!! Yup you probably WOULD call it a beam, and it IS this that I will need to support by means of a column or similar at the point where it's being cut off short of the wall to accommodate the staircase. And yes, it IS supporting the joists and therefore the whole...

Building Regs: New Staircase/Alteration of trimmer

Hi there Woody Thanks for your reply. Sorry for any confusion! Basically what I call the 'trimmer' is the main joist running the width of the room and this is supporting the other joists (obviously at right angles) on hangers. The staircase is going up a wall, a wall that the trimmer is set...

Building Regs: New Staircase/Alteration of trimmer

Hello I'd be REALLY greatful for some advice here please! I realise that my question should fall into the building forum too so apologies if that is the case. I'm putting a staircase into an existing mezzanine area after reinforcing it to B Regs requirements. I'll have to remove the width of...

    Timber Column

Hi y'all I'm converting a mezzanine-type of storage area in what used to be the garage, into a mezz. bedroom area, and to get a compliant staircase in, will have to cut away the main joist for the staircase access. This goes from wall-wall (widthwise) and supports the other joists. Before I go...

    Insulating Pitched Roof

Ta for that oldun....... ....if I went with 50mm insulation covered with 12.5mm plasterboard - across the rafters (think the BI will insist on it somehow), what's the best way to fix the Kingspan/Celotec to the rafters? And then the plasterboard thro the lot? Many thanks for not getting...

    Insulating Pitched Roof

Oldun and Freddie - thanks very much for your replies. I'm getting the feeling that the best solution is: 1) Fix 50x50 (2"x2") timbers to existing rafters 2) 100mm insulation between rafters, keeping a 50mm (2") airflow gap 3) 37.5mm PL 4000 - or 50mm insulation covered with 12.5mm...
