Can a boxed sash window have weights on one side?

Hi all, Thanks for that, looks like I'm stuck with wide central part. I'll talk to manufacters to see if they can reduce boxing - they say 100mm per box. Many thanks

Can a boxed sash window have weights on one side?

Hi All, Can someone advise me on box sash window manufacture? I need to get some windows made :( The window opening is approx 1.8m x 1.1m and the planning permission is for two sash windows side by side. My problem is that if I get four normal windows made the boxes will be either...

What base for tiled hearth over suspended floor?

Karis - thank you for info - will follow that advice.

What base for tiled hearth over suspended floor?

Thanks fo that - I've got the latest and it at least confirms the flush hearth. Now all I need is some advice on what base to lay the tiles on. I think 10mm steel sheet is over the top. Having sorted the stove hearth regs out I may re-post the question around a situation where tiles are just...

What base for tiled hearth over suspended floor?

Furthermore! http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADJ_2002.pdf Building regs part J2. Para 2.26 .... The edges of this (non-combustable surface) should be marked to provide a warning to the building occupants and to discourage combustible floor finishes such as carpet from...

What base for tiled hearth over suspended floor?

The installation will be done by a HETAS registered installer. However, I'm finding inconsistencies in their opinions on several matters and I want to be sure about the hearth. I phoned HETAS who gave me the number of a technical guy from an official organisation (sorry but I've forgot what...

What base for tiled hearth over suspended floor?

Marklamond and Karis thank you for your advice. I hope the bit about the hearth not being flush with the floorboards can be overcome - my wife is dead keen on them being flush. I'm building a new extension on a listed building. The joists are 225mm and the gap underneath them to the oversite...

What base for tiled hearth over suspended floor?

Hi all - please can anybody give advice on what is normally used as a base when creating a quarry tile hearth for a woodburner? Plywood, floorboards, steel plate? I'm ok with laying the tiles - its just the type of base. The joists span 2 metres and are 9". The quarry tiles are 6"x6"...

getting started with hearth on suspended floor

hi there - thanks for that I can see what you've done but I would not have the luxury of building up from the oversite - the hearth will lie over the remains of a bread oven and I'm not allowed to touch it. I'll maybe post in another forum section - perhaps somebodys done a similar job there.

Victorian door bevelled/square edge panels - which way hang?

So in my case the public area is the kitchen. The utility room is entered from the kitchen. The plain side of the door is inside the utility room and the fancy side is on show in the kitchen. If thats correct then the door will hang exactly the direction I want. The door is from a period...

Victorian door bevelled/square edge panels - which way hang?

Ok so raised panel side faces kitchen. I wouldn't normally fuss over something like this but it is a period house and I would like it done the traditional way!

Victorian door bevelled/square edge panels - which way hang?

Sorry - got that wrong! - its the side with chamfered panels that has had what looks like a clothes hook or something similar.

Victorian door bevelled/square edge panels - which way hang?

Thanks for that JobandKnock. So the chamfered panels face into the kitchen. I should have said it is an internal door - probably from a bedroom. I did think it might be the other way since the side with the square edge panels looks as though it had a hook for hanging a coat etc.

Victorian door bevelled/square edge panels - which way hang?

Can anybody please help me with problem hanging period door? The door is victorian/georgian. It has square edge panels on one side and chamfered panels on the other. The door opens from a kitchen into a utility room. Do the chamfered panels show on the kitchen side? Or is there no "correct"...

    wiring colours in new extension

Thanks for that idea - never thought anybody would buy it. But it looks as if there may be a continuing need for red/black for buildings on red/black. Especially where sockets/lighting get extended and no need for BC.

    wiring colours in new extension

Phoned BC (North Herts) - not something we can comment on - go talk to an electrician. Phoned 3 electricians - advised change to blue/brown. If I tried more may get someone to do red/black but can do without the hassle. Need to buy new cable and scrap perfectly good red/black. Crazy world...

    wiring colours in new extension

hi GaryMo I'm warming to the idea of your house(lol). If I split the proceeds with BC maybe they'll agree to red/black! I knew BC was probably the best place to start but am reluctant to contact the planning dept since they always succeed in depressing me - especially when I get the sick...

    wiring colours in new extension

hi riveralt Ok ok I'll get leccy in but only to agree the cable runs - I'm going to insist on the sawing/drilling. With respect to all electricians I know the structure inside out and would not want anybody sawing/drilling into my carefully crafted woodwork and insulation. All the work will...

    wiring colours in new extension

Thank you all very much for contributions. I should have said the extension is a replacement for a previous ext - which was wired in red/black. It justs seems such a waste to scrap unused cable for the sake of an EU regulation. Red/black was legit as recent as 2006. The old wiring I...
