If it is swa cable then yes, it is gripped by the gland. If you don't have the correct tool, it can be awkward to grip inner nut. Try tapping it anti clockwise with an old chisel or slotted screwdriver. They're brass so hopefully not too corroded.

As Stardanny says but on a slight separate note... Where you describe a 'switched socket', do you mean it's a plug socket or just a switch? It looks like just a switch from your pic. If so this should be (easily) replaced with a switched fused control unit with correct rating fuse. And I hope...

As se As securespark suggested, anti corrosive fittings. These clip onto the supplied brackets so no holes to be made in fitting.

Why not do away with conduit and use these http://www.screwfix.com/p/tower-male-comp-gland-white-20mm-pack-of-2/45943 with round flex? I'm not sure if Screw fix glands come with a rubber seal but I know some brands do. You will also have to consider potential water entry into the light fittings...

There's been talk of tat Chinese imports of late so thought I'd pipe up. I've been asked if I can fix this... Extra low voltage power supply line and neutral pins snapped off leaving them not protruding, but exposed with shutter open, in a child's room. Pins are poor quality and appear undersized.

Dodgy plug/power supply

Today I saw a gland that was glued onto the end of plastic conduit. Is there a more suitable way of attaching this? Slightly related, has anyone attempted to thread plastic conduit?
