Tiling over areas with slight movement

Thanks, ditra is a good suggestion, it will add to the cost (I assume I have to do the whole area not just a strip in the doorways) but the main issue is that levels have been carefully calculated and another 5mm will definitely be a problem... There are some other thinner decoupling products...

Tiling over areas with slight movement

We are planning to tile over a large (about 7m x 7m) area that was previously three adjoining rooms - the old kitchen and dining room with an extension built across the back. All three have been recently re-screeded to get them to the same level. Planning to use large format tiles and looking...

    Finish for Chestnut Floor

What recommendations for finishing a solid chestnut floor? I have read that because of the high tannin content, not all products are compatible, but I haven't found any specific advice about Chestnut on manufacturer websites. Hard Wax or another Matt finish preferred...

    Wall plates for false ceiling

Hi, I am putting in a false ceiling in a room about 4m x 4m. happy with most aspects (plasterboard on metal frame fixed to new joists at 1m centres) but have not been able to find anything specific about fixings for the wall plates. M12 studs at 400mm centres as for a floor would seem...

    Painting over Sikkens Woodstain

OK, seen that name before but never used it. Better than Dulux Super Grip?

    Painting over Sikkens Woodstain

I need to paint some mahogany window frames, previously finished with Sikkens THB (that's a solvent based translucent woodstain). I will be painting some white and some cream, probably satin based. What's the best way to prepare and should I use a primer or undercoat? Would the preparation...

    Earthing in France

Thanks, my issue is indeed the regulation about how many mm2 of wire you can have in different-sized conduit. That's 5 x 2.5mm in a 20mm rigid conduit which would mean only one complete L-N-E circuit, but there could be 2 circuits if the earth wire were shared. I would like to follow regs as...

    Earthing in France

A question about earth wiring in France: I am trying to bring the wiring more in line with regulations. If there are a couple of adjacent outlets, e.g. for washer and dishwasher, which need their own mcb and wiring, do they each need an individual earth? The wiring is all conduit based: there...

LED upgrade on existing 12V transformers

Just a quick question for PrenticeBoyofDerry: Was that price for labour only or for the complete job?

LED upgrade on existing 12V transformers

Interesting datasheet from Philips - looks like one of those products would meet our friend's needs exactly. Pity they don't explain how they do it... Here's another similar (though I think they have MR16, need to check)...

LED upgrade on existing 12V transformers

A friend of my wife asked my advice on this topic: I was not sure of the answer but said I knew a place to ask... Problem is that her kitchen halogen downlights (50W) were installed buried in insulation and consequently overheat badly; some are now brown and several transformers have failed...

    UPVC Window leaking

Looking closely at the outside gaskets the mitres weren't cut that well and so there are quite some gaps. Next challenge is waitiung for some dry weather so I can try mastic...

    UPVC Window leaking

No, no residue that I can see - but I did clean everything when I took it all apart originally and there might have been residue then. Taken it all apart 3 times now including check today. Yes, definitely some water sat in the frame under the DGU. I can't see how/why it makes its ways over...

    UPVC Window leaking

We have a couple of windows in a conservatory that leak regularly in heavy rain, just two units out of many. The water leaks in near one mitre in each case. The windows are of the type where the sealed unit can be taken out from the inside, plastic bars with rubber wipers provide the seal...

Noggins or Herringbone under Replacement Floor

I didn't find any evidence that plywood was quieter than chipboard - in fact the high performance acoustic flooring I saw on the web seems to be generally chipboard or MDF plus other layers. Batts probably better I agree, much better for a given thickness - but also many times more expensive...

Noggins or Herringbone under Replacement Floor

Did some research and was not sure if I should even bother... but we needed a new carpet & I thought "now is the time" So I have gone ahead and lifted the old floor - which was 18mm chipboard - so hopefully don't say I am wasting my time? I am hoping that by gap filling between wall blocks and...

Noggins or Herringbone under Replacement Floor

In process of replacing a first floor bedroom floor - primarily to increase sound insulation. Have discovered just one set of Noggins across 4m of span which seems a bit light and thought I might add another two. the floor - 7" x 2.5" joists - has always been a bit lively. Any advice of the...

    PU Foam and T&E cable

Checked with the manufacturer today - and the foam poses no problems for PVC house wiring. :) This answer might vary from other manufacturers - I am using SIROFLEX Trade Strength Expanding Foam, as sold by Toolstation amongst others.

    PU Foam and T&E cable

I take your point, Chri5, but not sure sand and cement would be that much easier to get out... Personally I think there are places where foam provides a good alternative to traditional methods - but it is true that the Cowboys of this world often use it as a bodge - and that gets it a bad name...
