Comando Socket for EV charging (In Scotland)

Maybe a better question would be 'What are the regs relating to install of a 32A comando socket?' since products like the one below claim to be compatible with standard comando socket installations...

Comando Socket for EV charging (In Scotland)

100% valid question and that's part of the reason I'm hesitent to drop £1.1k on this. Basically, going to 16A would drop our charge time from ~4 hours to ~2.5hours. Basically means you could get a couple of full charges in per day rather than one. There's enough benefit there to make me at...

Comando Socket for EV charging (In Scotland)

Thanks, that all looks reasonably straightforward. I guess what is not clear to me is which sections I can ignore since I am technically installing a comando socket rather than a fixed EV charger. For example, sections 5 through 9 would appear to relate to installing a dedicated fixed EV...

Comando Socket for EV charging (In Scotland)

I have a hybrid van that charges at a max rate of 16A. A full wall mount EV Charger will cost me £1100 (installed). This will give me up to 32A but I won't need that any time soon. I have a redundant 40A RCBO in my consumer unit that used to feed a cooker (no longer used). It is of the type...

SP to DP Wylex RCBO swap

Just spoke to Wylex tech support (who were brilliant). Apparently the NHXS1B40 will drop in as a replacement.

SP to DP Wylex RCBO swap

Our consumer unit is a Wylex from ~2010 and uses NHXSBS1B'X' RCBOs. We have an unused NHXSBS1B40 wired off to a junction box that I'd hoped to use for an EV charger but apparently that will be a no-go because the NHXSBS1B40 is single pole. Is there a 'drop in' DP equivalent of this RCBO that...

    Cooker wiring distribution

Thanks for all the input on this. Really helpful. Sounds like I'm just asking for a 6mm spur from the original outlet plate. Nice and easy. Cheers!

    Cooker wiring distribution

Jeez, I see what you mean. If I'm doing my diversity calc correctly I should only ever need ~26A Hob = 32A Oven = 16A Micro/combi/whatever = 16A Total = 64A So, ((64A - 10A) * 30%) +10A = 26.2A Is that right? In that case, the 32A RCBO makes sense even if I were to add a full second oven...

    Cooker wiring distribution

Nope, it's a 16A hard wired one. I gather needs an electrician to install.

    Cooker wiring distribution

Appreciate I'll be getting an electrician in to do this but looking to understand what I'll be asking them to do. We currently have a standard electric cooker (hob and oven in one freestanding unit). It connects to an outlet on the wall behind it via a simple, unswitched, twin outlet wall...

    Electricity usage monitoring

That's awesome. To be fair, our dog won't even go outside on days like today. Only downside of the app is that I can now actually see how much electricity my family waste by leaving stuff switched on!!!!! It's turning me into a grumpy old man.

    Electricity usage monitoring

Okay, made some progress on this: 1. The Shelly EM and clamp turned up and I was able to hook them up and get the app working without any hassle (YMMV). Actually quite an impressive little device. Physical installation was trivial (put it on an unused lighting circuit from the consumer unit)...

    Electricity usage monitoring

Not sure I follow? I know we have high consumption (from the bill) but now I need to figure out what is causing it (whether that be a device consuming high power or a habit within the household). I don't see how the bill helps with the latter?

    Electricity usage monitoring

Sure, if time were no issue and the culprit were running continuously, this would work perfectly well. Unfortunately, I have 18 circuits. Observation time to get adequate resolution would need to be ~1 hour which would mean 18 hours without power to collect the full set. If I then want to find...

    Electricity usage monitoring

Great, thanks. I'm happy working with wiring and actually have a spare electrical box right next to the main incomer to our boards. I don't have the Pi unfortunately. There's a home assistant app for IOS but I doubt it's the same thing. Either way, seem like this is a decent enough solution...

    Electricity usage monitoring

Thanks. I'm finding my feet with this. Is 'Home Assistant' the Shelly app or a compatible third party app? Ohhh, and to be totally clear. I'd need to buy the Shelly EM, 120A clamp and that's it? I'm assuming the app is free.

    Electricity usage monitoring

Yes, I was thinking of one of these. But, like you say, most items we own have a stated, or easily estimated, energy usage so some kind of logging would be useful. Our usage is 4x typical for a representative household so I'm guessing there is a single culprit using more than I'd imagine. In...

    Electricity usage monitoring

Sure, but if you need to measure your actual consumption to debug an unexpected behaviour, they are very useful.

    Electricity usage monitoring

I'm not sure I follow? The issue here is that I don't have (and can't have) a smart meter. So, I'm looking for alternatives. Apologies if I've misunderstood.

    Electricity usage monitoring

I'm not sure I'd go that far. The meters in our house were over 30 years old so probably due for replacement anyway. It's just a bit frustrating that they continue to roll them out in our town where (as it turns out) nobody can get connected. The Scottish network has been rolled out by a...
