Damp Wall, High Drive and Cavity Full of 'Stuff'...

Not taking out every brick - I don't need to just to clear the cavity, and a builder I trust advised against it. His view is that it permanently weakens the wall. And the inner leaf has a lot of weight sitting on it (existing first floor structure, new steel and timber for attic conversion) so...

    Record for most underrated cable?

Now I've calmed down a bit, it occurs to me that what I found wasn't really dangerous as such - which all those others are. Neal

    Record for most underrated cable?

When we moved into this house, there was this dubious looking socket - and it didn't work. Well, never mind it looked a bit dodgy and it was in a stupid place near the cooker. Finally got to take if off yesterday - and it was spurred off the cooker point in telephone cable. I think I know why it...

Damp Wall, High Drive and Cavity Full of 'Stuff'...

Nothing 'better quality' about the original construction of this one :( - or most of the work that's been done on it since  Why do people spend vast amounts of money and time doing stuff so badly? One room is coming on nicely so far - was/am considering injecting a DPC in a bit, when...

Damp Wall, High Drive and Cavity Full of 'Stuff'...

Definitely do have a cavity - with metal wall ties. Must admit though that the age is a bit of a guess - based on surveyor's estimate when bought (1925) and the recollections of some of the 70-80 year old neighbours - the house was present when they were young children (it was the village shop)...

Damp Wall, High Drive and Cavity Full of 'Stuff'...

Hi all, have an approx. 80yr old house, with one wall very damp. The adjoining drive was higher by about 10-15cm, and the cavity was (and in places still is) 1m deep in compacted (presumably) old mortar that's fallen down over time. (At least, that's my interpretation - I guess the whole...

    Router Advice

DAZB, thanks for the feedback - sorry about the delay in replying (been away for work). I'm happy to buy off ebay with sensible precautions - but somehow I doubt I'd ever sell a nice 1/2in router:-) My builder reckons I need a morticer as well - seems a bit much for around six mortices per...

    Router Advice

Finally worked out that I'll be able to make our remaining windows in less time than I spend on the phone to the joiners - they're good but very busy (first batch close to a year late by the time everything was sorted). My ancient B&D 1/4in router was just up to the test pieces to convince...

New Oak Floor - what underneath?

Thanks for the replies - and apologies for the delay in getting back. I'm leaning towards joists and secret nailing - mainly because that would mean I'm only doing things I've done successfully before and it's too expensive to mess up. Would it really be cheaper to pack out a 50mm gap...

New Oak Floor - what underneath?

I've got a nice new stack of oak floor aclimatizing for a couple of weeks, and have conflicting advice on what to do with it. It's 20mm thick and the final floor level needs to come up 70mm total, so obviously I've got to put 50mm of something underneath. Suggestions have been: float it; nail...

HW heating choices - combi, unvented, themal store?

Apologies in advance for being a bit less prepared asking this - sudden change of plan... Also this is a bit long :( In the process of renovating and extending an oldish house, and replacing all plumbing (and most else but that's beside the point). The main issue is the showers... Attic has...

    Measuring Ze and Zs...

I was going to have all circuits (and main bonding) disconnected when I did this - it'd basically be a conventional earth loop test if I didn't? Neal

Now why didn't I think of that? :D So I'm not being completely insane then? Neal

    Measuring Ze and Zs...

OK, there I was with an electrician all lined up to put a new CU in (many thanks for the advice and comments BTW) when he disappears... Turns out he's gone to Spain to look after his (very elderly) parents who've been taken ill. And I can't get another electrician (that I trust anyway). I...

    loft insulation

Since nobody else has answered this... Under-run just means that the cable is capable of carrying more current than is typically the case in normal operation. The current carrying of 1mm twin and earth is a fair bit more than your 5A protection device, so even if there are some correction factors...

Many thanks for TT answers, and one more thing...

[/url] OK - thanks. Had a bit of a rethink and currently (this isn't completely stable) the plan is: -5 socket (attic, 1st floor, ground floor, kitchen, office) - could ditch the office but will be running several computers so... It seems a lot I know, but the house is quite 'rambling' and a...

Many thanks for TT answers, and one more thing...

Thanks for the replies - I haven't seen a 24-way plastic I must admit, but I probably don't need quite that many any way. Just for info: 1. Work's been ongoing for a year now, so Part P doesn't apply yet. The building inspector was pretty relaxed about it in any case when I brought the...

Many thanks to those that replied to my question about a new consumer unit on a TT supply. Sorry about the delay in replying - work just got insanely busy for a bit. Will probably go for the RCBO option (and as it happens yes I do have to dig a trench alongside the house :)) Two other...

    Consumer Unit for TT Supply

Hi, have a TT supply, am in the middle of a complete rewire (part of extension/renovation) and need a new CU. Believe I need a 100mA time delay RCD as main incomer? Then 30mA RCD(s) where appropriate? Have seen a split RCD board from Rexel Senate but this is only 10 way (5+5) which is a bit...
