    Renovating an external door

Thank you for your prompt response! I have just googled "composite" and I most composite doors that I saw in my brief search had UPVC cover. Mine, however, appears to reveal metal of some sort in places where the paint is coming off. I took a magnet and it sticks to both inside and outside of...

    Renovating an external door

Hello DIYNot members! I would like to give the external door I have a new coat of paint, but I am not sure of what material it is made of: it looks like painted metal to me: What type of door could it be, and what paiting options are available for it? Thank you in advance!

Restoring a healthy look of a wooden doorbell

Dear DIYnot members, I am looking to give this wooden doorbell panel a bit of TLC, but I don't know what oil or paint to use in this situation: The panel is exposed to the elements. I don't think it has massively changed from its original colour - perhaps became a few shades brighter. Any...

Kitchen top shelves - uneven ceiling

Dear Forum Members, I am planning to install additional MDF shelves on top of the existing kitchen cabinets, and I have noticed that my ceiling is uneven: The existing cabinet is installed correctly - I've checked the top of it with spirit level meter. Therefore I 'blame' the ceiling. I've...

Reinforcing hanging tiles and putting them back

I would nail them down, but I don't know how to remove the tiles from the top - they appear to be covered by a side of the roof: Does this mean that I won't be able to get behind this white beam to remove the top row?

Reinforcing hanging tiles and putting them back

Thank you for all the answers! I will at least get a quote for getting everything nailed down and at worst will try the adhesive. Would anyone be able to recomment any brands for such a job?

Reinforcing hanging tiles and putting them back

Thank you @blup. The buildings insurance excess is £500. As the tile came off clean, it wasn't nailed originally, correct? If I simply do the replacement of the tile my repair cost will be equal to the cost of the spare tile (as the first one is still in one piece!). I already have the special...

Reinforcing hanging tiles and putting them back

Dear DIYNot forums members, The recent hurricane has blown some hanging tiles away from the side of my house and I would like to put them back in a way that will be more secure (the tiles have damaged cars parked on the drive). Would it be a good idea to secure the tiles with the No More...

    Moving a radiator

Quick update: I had to leave the system to run hot for several hours and then cool down - that has appeared to help the air accumulate at the radiator closest to the combi-boiler. I have then repeated thsi a few times and the scratching sound has gone away

External wall construction - possibly done wrong in a newbuild?

    Sorry guys, can I please ask what you are talking about? I have found this table online: ● Common building bricks—3.43 N/mm2 ● Second class bricks—6.867N/mm2 ● First class bricks— 10.3N/mm2 ● sun dried bricks— 1.47 – 2.45 N/mm2 ● fly ash bricks— 8.82 – 9.81 N/mm2 ● AAC block — 2.943-...

    Moving a radiator

Thank you! I wasn't very clear - I did go through the balancing process (making the list of all rads, seeing which one heats up first, reducing the OUT lockshield, repeating, etc.). The only concern I have now is a 'scratching sound' that can be heard in one of the small rads upstairs. It...

External wall construction - possibly done wrong in a newbuild?

It could be the local Southwater Brick, which is sort of made of mud. I've heard that half of London is built on it :)

So it's not a structural problem then? Good! Thank you!

External wall construction - possibly done wrong in a newbuild?

Dear forum members! I am a complete novice in these matters and would greatly appreciate your help. I have external wall specification for my house listed as such: So I assume that wooden sheathing must be BEHIND the TSW studs. This is confirmed by the Celotex website: However, I've just...

    Moving a radiator

Dear Forum Members, I have now completed the move. Here are a few things that were unusual or of interest: The original radiator feet supplied with the column rad were not high enough to lift the lower part of it over the skirtboard. We have this large skirtboard in our newbuild. This meant...

    Moving a radiator

Just got my head around the way the proper recessed seal is meant to be fitter to a studded drywall: https://www.manthorpebp.co.uk/sites/default/files/MBP%208233f%20-%20GRS%20RADIATOR%20PIPE%20SEAL%20%26%20GUIDE%20-%20FIXING%20INSTRUCTIONS.pdf I am thinking: "it would be easier to fit the...
