    insulating floorboards

Thanks Scrit. I'll check the skirting gaps and see if there's significant draught there. thanks for the url too - we won't be doing the work in the cellar for a good few months but I've started looking for info and this site seems useful.

    insulating floorboards

I have sanded floorboards in my living room - they look great but since taking up the carpet it's definitely colder in there. Under the living room is the cellar, which is unheated and a bit damp but it is a full height room so access is easy. There are no gaps or holes in the floorboards so...

    ceiling light wiring

thanks for the reply B-A-S. The light is CE marked and it's new, from a high street retailer so it should meet all regs. The cables don't have any other colours under the casing - it looks like they just have the clear casing in place of the normal colours. To try to decribe it better...

    ceiling light wiring

I've bought a new pendant light - the instructions say to wire live in the light fitting to live in the ceiling, neutral to neutral (using a jointing block). But...all the wires coming out of the fitting are white (a whitish tranlucent casing round the cables). One of the 3 wires is slightly...

    bad smell from the bath!

Thanks chaps! lots of info here. I've had a look and there is a u-bend under the bath and the whb. The waste pipe from the whb runs under the length of the bath and then join the bath's waste pipe just under the bath u-bend. I'm going to call the plumber in to do this - I normally small jobs a...

It's a u-bend under the bath. Thanks for the link, I'll have another look tonight to see how this trap would fit on to the existing pipes.

    bad smell from the bath!

Recently, when i let the water out of the bath there's a really bad smell comes from the plug hole. The bathroom sink's drainage links into the pipe coming out of the bath and then this pipe runs under the batheroom and bedroom foor to the outside wall. I've tried one of those wire unblocker...

    Carpet Stone

Has any one used Carpet Stone (or is it stone carpet??!)? We're wanting to relay our patio and this is one of the options we're looking at. It's like a mat, made up of stones that are held together by plastic wires on the underside. It's meant to be faster/simpler to lay than individual bricks...

    Vertical Radiators

As narrow as possible; it's to create a bit of wall space in a bedroom that has a lot of alcoves. The ones I've seen are 180-200 cm high and about 40-60 cm wide - this size is fine. The room has fairly high ceilings (about 10') so it can take a tall radiator.

    Vertical Radiators

Does anyone know where I can get a good quality, basic vertical radiator? Most of the places/websites I've tried offer 'designer' versions at a high price. I'm happy to pay for quality but don't want/need the 'designer' look; just a plain radiator. I need about 5000 BTU's. Any suggestions?

    vinyl over bathroom tiles

Is it ok to put vinyl flooring over the tiles on my bathroom floor? I've been advised that the floor should be screed over, but the tiles are only a couple of years old and in good condition so I don't want to damage them. The vinly shop said that if I don't do this the grooves inbetween the...

do i need a new boiler???!

Thanks for the reply DP. It's a vokera flowmatic - it's a relief you say it should be fixable! I'm in Stockport - if you can recommend any one in this area I'd be grateful.

do i need a new boiler???!

I have a Vokera 20/80 RS boiler - not sure how old, as I've only lived in this house a few months. The radiators heat up ok but I've got worsening problems with the hot water. To get any hot water in the bath or sink I have to turn the taps right down to a dribble, but it only runs hot (though...

    Extractor fan wiring

Hi, I've recently moved into a new house & am doing some work in the kitchen. The existing extractor fan has never worked so I'm replacing it with a new one (the same model). The old one was wired into a junction box & I've wired the new one into the same sockets in the junction box as the old...
