    Cracked Drain

Hello all, Should I be concerned about the crack(s) in the drain shown here? The cracks are all at the upper side and don't go deep down, but I'm wondering if there is likely to be a problem if water gets through the gap etc... I had a drainage company round very recently and it's very...

    Blocking a chimney

Although it's highly unlikely I'll do this, what about removing the chimney altogether? How big a job is this, for someone who knows what they're doing? I see a number of houses like mine that are minus a chimney... (Obviously I know I won't be able to have a gas fire anymore!)

    Blocking a chimney

It's probably a daft question, but - why does it need to be open at both ends? I guess that this allows a *flow* of air, rather than just *access* to air? Would this explain why partially blocking (i.e. reducing) with a product such as that I gave a link for earlier, is ok, as long as the...

    Blocking a chimney

Hello all, I would like to block the bottom of my chimney for insulation reasons - would I have ventilation problems if I leave the top open, i.e. as is? I've being looking at these: http://www.chimney-balloon.co.uk/ Anyone have any experience of this type of thing? Regards, Richard.

Earthing of light switch mounting box

What do you mean by "fixed lug"? Do you mean where the screws (from the switch) attach to the box? If so, I think both were "loose", in the sense that they allowed very small (mm) adjustment of the switch position. Sounds sensible though, what you say. I will probably put the link in...

Earthing of light switch mounting box

Hello all, I changed a couple of old light dimming switches last week for "normal" brass switches. I ensured the new switches were firmly earthed, but I didn't connect an earth to the metal mounting box in the wall. How big a problem is this, if at all? I figured it was impossible for...

    Roof/Attic Issues

Ok, thanks for the advice. I have a roofer living across the road who's going to take a look when he gets back from his hols, but I wanted to get some info in the meantime. I'll do as you suggest with the 4x2. What's the significance of the staining drying off? Is damage less likely to...

    Roof/Attic Issues

Hello all, I was hoping someone could cast an eye over a few photos I've taken, just to let me know the severity/urgency of repair work: This shows the wood by the chimney stack. I've noticed some very very small leaks during the recent wild weather, with tiny amounts of water visible on...

    Consumer Unit - opinions wanted!

Thanks for all the replies, I'll digest all this info for a day or two... I'll also try to get that cladding off the wall over the weekend so I can see what (if anything) is going on behind it.

    Consumer Unit - opinions wanted!

That's a good point - I might strip it away so I know what's going on. I've only lived there a month so have been treading gently so far!

    Consumer Unit - opinions wanted!

I'm guessing the meter has been installed at a much later date? It looks considerably more modern than everything else!

    Consumer Unit - opinions wanted!

Sorry, that is actually what I meant - there is an earth block to the left of the consumer unit, the earth lead shown goes to it.
