How do I get this tap handle off!?

Yes, but pretty half-heartedly. I can't figure out any way to grip it, so guessed that they couldn't possibly have designed it that way? Any tricks for gripping a smooth flat cap??

How do I get this tap handle off!?

I can't figure out how to get this old tap handle off to replace the headgear. PLEASE has anyone ever come across one of these?? There's no slot anywhere to slide a screwdriver into and I've tried pretty hard to unscrew the grippy part of the handle from the smooth bit below it :(

    Restricted hot water flow

The taps are the old washer type. I've only just realised that the hot water tap now only spins half a turn. It definitely used to turn more that that - the cold one does 1.5 turns. Is that something obvious that can be fixed?

    Restricted hot water flow

I have a gravity fed system with a Salamander RHP50 only feeding the bath mixer tap with shower attachment. The pump is 18 months old and the installation is all in order with 22mm feeds in, a dedicated cold and Surrey flange on the hot. The mixer tap is rather old. It was in place when I...

    Which primer?

Thanks guys. It's only for spot priming previously painted window frames, so I've decided to just thin the undercoat 1:10 as described on the tin and use that to prime. I'll save Cheshire's advice for 8 years time when the Dulux Weathershield system finally wears out

    Which primer?

I'm painting external window frames with the Dulux Trade Weathershield system (undercoat and gloss already bought). I can't get hold of the Dulux Trade Wood Primer in time, so my choices are the Dulux Trade All Purpose primer (solvent based), or a different brand of wood primer - "Ronseal...

    Nailing or screwing chipboard

A 2lb hammer would be the heaviest thing and that would use 2 screws/nails/hooks. I'm now thinking I might cut some shelves out of the same sheet of material, so I'm considering MDF as an alternative. Can that also be screwed in the same way?

    Nailing or screwing chipboard

I want to put up some wall-mounted tool storage. It'll consist of a board of something screwed into the brick wall of my garage, with a variety of nails / screw-hooks / etc. to hang things off of. 18mm chipboard looks to be the cheapest solution for the backing board, but never having worked...

    Prime in patches?

If there's an official term for it it must be worth doing!

    Prime in patches?

Even 70 year old timber that's been primed before? (purely out of interest now, I'll heed the sanding advise regardless)

    Prime in patches?

Which approach would you recommend? Primer on the patches followed by undercoat all over, or one coat of combined primer & undercoat on the whole lot? Or rather is the latter sufficiently inferior to the former to be worth another day of drying time?

    Prime in patches?

I'm repainting my wooden window frames. Mostly it'll just be a matter of sanding existing paintwork then undercoating and topcoating, but in some places the existing paint is flaking so I'll end up going back to bare wood. Do I need to use primer on these small bare patches, on the whole lot, or...

    Painting upstairs bay window

Thanks joe-90. Those 2 bits of kit will make life easier - i was wondering how I'd lean the ladder against the windows. Don't suppose you know if the stand-off would be wide enough to rest either side of the window frame? Windows are about 500mm wide. I also clicked through to a little...

    Painting upstairs bay window

My wooden framed windows need prepping and painting. How would you guys access the first floor windows, in particular the bay? Is it sensible to try to do all that work up a ladder? Would the raised borders make some kind of raised platform unfeasible?

Earthing light switch to mains earth

Hmm, guess I should buy a plastic switch and surface mount box then. I'm ashamed to admit I bought the metal switch the other day because I like the look of it in the garage. Only afterwards did it occur to me that I've go no earth on my light circuit

Earthing light switch to mains earth

I've got a metal clad light switch in my garage, but no earth on the lighting circuit. Would wiring the earth from the light switch into the earth terminal in a juntion box that's on a spur from the ring main provide an effective earth, or would doing so introduce a new risk that's more...

Electric unvented cylinder - operation & controls?

My friend aked me to try to figure out the CH & DHW controls in his new flat, but unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with the system he has installed so was looking for some insights. Apologies but I didn't get any photos so will try to explain what I saw and hopefully this will trigger an "ah yes...

Kitchen is half concrete/wood - Can I use Self Level?

I had the same situation with floor substrates. My tiler braced the floor joists, replaced the floorboards with ply, then poured leveling compound over the whole lot. It's been down for a couple of months and seems to be holding up ok, though I do find the hollow echo when I walk on the old...
