Putting up a big ladder by yourself

Throw the rope over a bit of the scaffold. Might take a few tries. Or put the rope over the ladder itself like you see here: My dad used to put up a long ladder by 'bouncing' it against the wall while pushing up, until you can advance it one more rung while it's mid-bounce. Rince and repeat. I...

    Wood Filler or Caulk?

True it does make a difference which kind of no nails you're using, some dry 'glossy', other matte (can be painted over). Since I have probably already used the no nails to stick the woodwork to the wall, the cost of smearing a bit in the gap is nothing. Why would 2mm be a problem? Filler comes...

    Wall panelling

That's bolection moulding. My preferred supplier: https://www.dressermouldings.com/store/decorative-panel-moulds/ Here's some further inspiration (sorry it's American) https://www.thejoyofmoldings.com/pattern-book-molding-millwork-designs/wainscoting-designs/

    Wood Filler or Caulk?

https://www.thejoyofmoldings.com/when-to-use-spackling-and-when-to-use-caulk-moldings/ Personally I wouldn't use caulk for anything, it's a horrible material. Any place you might use caulk, filler or no-nails works better. Next time glue all your mitres.

    Fixing picture rail to wall

Yes exactly, I always use a plug.

    Fixing picture rail to wall

When I fitted my picture rail I used a combination of no more nails and a couple of screws here and there. Screws were there for peace of mind since pictures can be heavy. (Whenever no more nail fails, I swap to expanding foam, though obviously you need to hold the object in place while it...

Skirting - What type of nail gun - hire or buy?

Skirting -use expanding foam (use weights or nail scrapwood to the floor to stop it moving while it dries). You can use a screw here and there if you really think you need it, but there is no need to use screws everywhere in modern times. Architrave -glue with no more nails and a few panel pins...

Best way to Prep wooden floor boards for laying vinyl?

Same here, though I added a sheet of 2mm foam on top of the floorboards, with 6mm ply on top. I used ring-shank nails, 8 inch spacing, quicker than screws.

    Filling hole with expanding foam

Can't really. Just shove a stiff wire down the straw when you need to use it again.

    Shower skirting damp cause?

Basically yes. It's not exactly pretty but I don't think you have much alternative! Clear silicone shouldn't look too bad. I have exactly the same problem where I get a small leak between the bottom of the aluminium strip and the tray. Like you it has spoiled my MDF skirt, although not as bad as...

    Shower skirting damp cause?

Silicone every seam around that aluminium bar, it's your only hope.

    Scaffolders insurance

Oh goody. He refused to create a lower platform with a ladder up to the higher platform because he's "not allowed to leave ladders on it". When I said I could hire an extra long ladder and suggested he absorb the cost he had a hissy fit and said he'd take the lot down. I shall have to wait and...

    Scaffolders insurance

Thanks, I haven't seen a NASC. But when I ask him for it I suspect he will raise the point of me originally offering to pay in cash, ahem. Maybe I'm to blame as much as him. On the one hand he didn't ask me if I was a business. On the other hand I didn't tell him what height to provide access...

    Scaffolders insurance

I hired a scaffolder to put some up so I could point my chimney stack. He put it up while I was out and I discovered he put in only one platform and it's too high for me to reach with my 25ft ladder. When I rang him to ask him to put up a ladder or a lower platform with access, he said "why do...

Plastic microbore to 15mm valve, how?

Ok I bought a couple of these reducers, but how do I use them? What keeps the pipe sealed?

Plastic microbore to 15mm valve, how?

I need to fit a towel rail which has normal 15mm valves. The pipes in my house are 10mm plastic microbore. Presumably I need some kind of reducer fitting, but do I need to use some kind of insert in the end of the plastic pipe to stop crushing?

    Lateral thinking & Improvisation

I gave an impressed chuckle after watching this video. Some guys driving a truck in Africa lost the oil from the diff, so they stuffed bananas in there! (Timestamp 31:00)
