    Non adjustable upvc window?

I have a window that closes too tight to the frame on the lock side, such that it requires quite a bit of force to push the handle down. It is clearly tighter on the lock side than the hinge side, by at least 1mm. I was expecting to see a cam of some sort where I can adjust the lock pin depth...

    Replacement UPVC door seal?

Some of the retailers on fleabay do a sample pack if you get stuck. And if you get really really stuck, Extrudaseal do a matching service if you send them a sample.

Best paint brushes and rollers please?

+1 for Wooster brushes. I have a variety of Gold Edge and Silver Tip, the former are a bit firmer. Rollers, meh, I don't notice a huge difference between the various brands. Used a variety of Purdy, Wooster and Hamilton recently, all stood up pretty well compared to the cheapo ones.

    Matt emulsion over vinyl matt

Never put PVA anywhere near anything you are going to paint. I'd always sand the walls before painting with a pole sander to remove previous imperfections, otherwise you will only exacerbate them. Don't have to go mad, shouldn't take all day. If you are sure it is vinyl matt and not silk, you...

    Extension doorway & moisture ingress

In this configuration though, it is still the lead which is the sole protection against moisture entering where the extension meets the house, running down the outside of the brickwork which is now inside the extension? The reason I ask is because the lead has failed twice in about 10ish years...

    Extension doorway & moisture ingress

Ah I see, something like this?

    Extension doorway & moisture ingress

That is correct. Where should the cavity trays go in this situation though? Surely they can only divert water into the extension, into the house, or into the existing cavity of the house. None of these seem correct?

    Extension doorway & moisture ingress

My house has a single-story side extension, with lead flashing installed where it joins the house. The house itself is timber-frame with brick skin & cavity. The extension simply has studwork fixed to the (previously external) brick wall. There is a doorway from the main house into the...

    Tiling around a window

Could be that you didn't get a good contact due to the gap, or could be that the wall you're tiling onto is too 'dusty' to accept the adhesive. If it happens again, try giving it a coat of SBR before putting them back up.

    Tiling around a window

When they fell down, was the adhesive still stuck to the tile or to the wall?

    Tiling around a window

I've never seen that happen before. How thick are your tiles? Normally just notch the adhesive onto the top reveal, bit of back-buttering for good measure, then wiggle it into place.

Is 6mm hardiebacker on for stud wall

I'd use 12mm if its going straight onto the studwork, or 6mm if its overboarding existing plasterboard/brick.

    uPVC window anatomy

I've ordered a load of different sample packs, hopefully something is close enough. Most of the flippers I've seen are 'v-shaped' whereas this is more like an f-shape.

    uPVC window anatomy

Hi guys Trying to replace the various rubber components of my windows as they've all had it, and I'm not entirely sure what the 'names' are of the parts, which makes searching for them quite hard! Firstly, the rubber that is attached to the frame which the window closes against. I believe this...

    Datum line for tiling...

Sorry I forgot about the tub, blame it on tiredness! Yes in that situation you are right. Most of the principal still applies but if tape isn't working then maybe a new batten would be helpful. I've never done it myself. Given that the important part is keeping it snug to the dry tiles, id...

How do I fix this mess?!

I'd be a bit concerned as to why that plaster behind the tiles has come away from the brickwork so easily. Any signs of damp?

    Datum line for tiling...

I've always put my original batten up such that there are 2 missing rows (1 full and 1 cut) at the bottom. Once it's all set, dealing with one wall at a time, I take the batten off, and measure the final row of tiles. I do this by holding or taping the last 'full' tile in place temporarily...

    Step ladders and extension ladders

I'm generally up and down ladders rather than staying up them for prolonged periods. Step ladders generally for decorating work and longer ladders for outdoor repairs e.g. leadwork, gutters etc.

    Coving

You can buy a plastic coving mitre which you can offer up to the existing piece, and use a very sharp knife or multi-tool to cut it. Something like this https://www.jewson.co.uk/building-materials/plastering-plasterboard/coving/products/KWCM0127/knauf-cove-mitre-127mm/ Check coving size in...

    Step ladders and extension ladders

I'm more interested in quality than price, so I'll take a look at Youngman. I wondered if the 2-section adjustable ones like Little Giant make would be worth the outlay too, to have the height adjustment. Was having a look at some 4-way ladders last night, they look really useful. Could...
