    ive went with this solution, found some angle iron and screwed the noggins in this way - loads spread further - not entirely happy with how much thread has gone into the wood (about 1") - but it seems solid enough - should be even more solid with the half pedestal in place. and

    problem is the brackets are L shaped and will stick out above the lip - unless somehow i can turn the brackets around and somehow get in to screw :D that's a possibility
