    Room Thermostat Upgrade Woes

If the neutral isn’t connected at the other end, what would that mean? Does it mean that only a mechanical thermostat (like the one already in there) can be used?

    Room Thermostat Upgrade Woes

Yeah fair point. I'll take mine over to hers next time. Not much point me wasting energy endlessly speculating from 20 miles away!

    Room Thermostat Upgrade Woes

ok...so...the suspect thermostat actually works fine at my place. Powers up straight away, does what it says on the tin. So I guess there must be something "funny" (not sure what I mean by that) about the wiring at my gf's flat - or at least it must be different somehow to mine. Any suggestions...

    Room Thermostat Upgrade Woes

So I manage to refit the old thermostat and after I made sure the separate timer was set to on, everything now works fine - so no harm done. I guess either the wiring is somehow different to my place (I just assumed that red/blue/yellow/earth would behave the same everywhere, but perhaps not?)...

    Room Thermostat Upgrade Woes

true - but after I switched the timer to “on”, I tried the new thermostat again and it still wouldn’t switch on (sorry, I may have omitted to mention that).

    Room Thermostat Upgrade Woes

Thanks everyone for your replies - I’m very grateful as always. I checked the timer next to the boiler and to my surprise it was set to “off”. GF tells me she always has it set to “on” and that she hasn’t changed it. However I turned the electrics off before fiddling with any wires so I’m...

    Room Thermostat Upgrade Woes

I’m trying to swap out the room thermostat in my gf’s flat. She’s got an old analogue thing and I wanted to replace it with a digital programmable one. I bought her the same type as I have at home, and wired it up the same way as I have at home. Nothing - completely dead. when I reconnect the...

Room Thermostat - Quick Wiring Question

Using a cheap old skool Eberle manual thermostat for a few days (long story). My old broken thermostat had: * red into "L" * blue into "N" * yellow into "L1" (switched live?) Does anyone know where red/blue/yellow should go in the new thermostat please? (photo of wiring diagram below but I'm...

    Wiring Advice - New Lights

Yeah it does seem that way. The YouTube video I watched mentioned it too (and the video was made just a few months ago so I guess relates to the regs as they are today). Nuisance. The great irony of course is that my existing lighting circuits aren’t protected in that way because presumably the...

    Wiring Advice - New Lights

Thank you. I hadn't seen the stickies - have had a look now. I've found a nice YouTube video from a British electrician who has his own channel and he builds this exact layout in nice, simple stages. So I'm happy...except for the RCD question, which seems to have divided opinion here.

    Wiring Advice - New Lights

I’ve just removed my old doorbell, which was wired through the mains (replacing it with a more modern cordless doorbell). This left me with a bit of mains flex sticking out of the wall just above my fusebox in a hallway cupboard. I’d like to use that to power two 11W LED ceiling lights (bought...

    Cost of Replacing Kitchen Worktops...

The 3500 + VAT quote was on the basis that they’d get the worktops and sink from their own supplier, but I’d be equally happy to buy those myself and just pay to have everything cut and fitted. the quote was indeed blind - I described the details on the phone and sent a couple of photos, but...

    Cost of Replacing Kitchen Worktops...

Thank you. Yeah those prices sound a bit more sensible. To be fair yes I’ll need a new sink fitting (and presumably a bit of tinkering with the plumbing under the sink) and a gas hob to be disconnected and then reconnected afterwards (proper gas safe qualified person), so there’s a bit more work...

    Cost of Replacing Kitchen Worktops...

Want to remove 2 old laminate worktops and replace with solid wood items. Both approx 250cm x 60cm, joined together (L shape) In my mind I thought “a grand to buy the worktops and a grand to pay someone to do the work” but the only quote I’ve had so far is £3,500 (+VAT), which made my eyes...
