New solid oak kitchen surface - how to stop rot??

If you put five coats of danish oil on it certainly should be beading, which is good. Then just wipe up after youve finished washing up. Ive had wood worktops for last 10 years and danish as well as other oils will all do the job, then once a year or whenever it starts drying out, re oil it...

    Shelving

In my experience it can do, or it does not stain quite as nice as some other woods. Have never used varnish on pine.

    Shelving

Thank you I appreciate the advice. Will try get the straightest boards and leave in the room for a few weeks. Can i just lie them on the floor on top of each other. Reason for scaffold is because it is a decent depth and thickness, for a low price. It also has a bit of character and is...

    Shelving

Hi I'm wanting to build some shelves using scaffold boards. The wall has a boxed in plumbing running down the centre, so originally I was going to put shelves either side of it. But now I'm thinking of using one long board with a bit cut out for where the box is. Would the be any problems in...

Bonding 2 different coloured silicone sealants

Hi, I have removed a load of old silicone from the shower which has plastic boards rather than tiles. The boards are black marble effect so I am going to use black silicone vertically in the corners, but it might look strange to use black above the shower tray. However where the black vertical...

    Questions about Screws

I'm sick of running out of screws for DIY jobs such as hanging things, replacing door hinge screws, hanging blinds, bits of woodwork etc. So I want to buy a multi set with differences sizes and thicknesses, pozi top and I guess countersunk. However, all the trade packs in screwfix for example...

    Help Trimming Door

No doubt this is a basic question, but what is the best type of hand saw to cut the bottom of old pine doors; I need to trim some for new carpets? I do not have any power tools other than small sander and when I try use a hand plane, it stops suddenly when it hits the tenon joints in the bottom...

    MDF

Hi, I need some advice re. sanding MDF. I will be painting some MDF shelves with undercoat and eventually eggshell (oil) and will be giving them a sand down between coats. I'm aware i need to wear a mask, but not sure how to clean up the dust before the following coat. The first time I sand...

    Sanding

Does anyone have any tips on sanding? For example, rather than just using bits of paperbacked sandpaper, do the pros use electric sanding tools for walls, skirting, cupboards etc. Or do they use hand held cloth backed? Any tips appreciated Thanks.

Advice Needed on Primer and Undercoat

Thank you, im happy to use undercoat, I am just confused because some people say it is not needed on MDF, only primer and topcoat is. Likewise, some people say that you need a specific MDF primer for MDF, and none of those branded as MDF primers claim to be undercoat also!

Advice Needed on Primer and Undercoat

I dont think you can get any MDF primer that has undercoat in it as well. My options seem to be: A) Use MDF Primer just for the MDF, then 2 coats of oil based eggshell. Then use a Primer and Undercoat in 1 for the timber, then 2 coats eggshell or B) Use the MDF primer on both MDF and timber...

Advice Needed on Primer and Undercoat

All the primers for MDF I have seen are water-based. So I am not sure I have any other option. So I guess I could use MDF primer on both the MDF and timber, then undercoat the timber, then two oil based topcoats on both...?

Advice Needed on Primer and Undercoat

Thank you for your help - appreciated. I will get an MDF primer and use it also on timber skirting and sill. One other question, do I need to use undercoat on the skirting and sill, in between using primer and an oil based satinwood? From what I have read, after putting primer on MDF I can go...

Advice Needed on Primer and Undercoat

Hi all, I am decorating a bedroom and I need to paint some old alcove built in wardrobes, which have old paint on, some unpainted skirting, a bare timber sill and some MDF shelves that have recently been built. I am going to finish the MDF shelves, skirting and sill off in white oil based...

    Help - Insulating Bay Window

Thank you for your advice. When you say 'if there is ventilation' do you mean if there is a proper vent as opposed to air just getting in through cracks (the bay has pebble dashed front). If I assume that there is no specific ventilation (presuming you mean some type of vent) and if I do...

    Help - Insulating Bay Window

Hi, The plasterboard under our bedroom window has a bit missing and so I am getting a plasterer to sort this out when he skims the whole room and a few people have suggested taking off the old plaster from the stud wall immediately below the bay and then putting Celotex between the vertical...

    Sanding Wooden Door

Thanks for the advice, what does rebate size mean? The frame seems like a typical frame that you find next to chimney breasts in Victorian houses. It looks fairly solid. I may just risk it, sounds like worst case scenario I would need to get the frame replaced / repaired if it came adrift...

    Sanding Wooden Door

The marks are little dark spots all over the door. We recently purchased it and we wonder if it may have previously been marked by rain or something. If we use an orbital sander, what grit is finer than 80, given that 80 might be too course? Also, does sandpaper in DIY stores have the grit...

    Sanding Wooden Door

I need to sand down an old Victorian pine door to get rid of some marks, what is the best sandpaper to use as I am aware that you can scratch the wood instead of sanding. Also is it easier / worth buying and using an electric sandpaper.

Help filling hairline cracks in newly skimmed walls!

I have just had a bedroom skimmed and have noticed a couple of hairline cracks in the corners of the room, about three or four foot down from the ceiling that sort of run diagonally up the wall towards the ceiling. Its a Victorian terraced house so I presume this is not uncommon? Anyway, I...
