    Epoxy Resin Floors

My cellar has a concrete screed floor that I'm looking to cover with something more practical (I use it as a utility room, workshop and gym). I really like the rubber or PVC floor tiles from companies like Desouple but they are prohibitively expensive (the cellar is around 60m2). I came...

    Noisy Saniflow

I have just moved house and inherited a Saniflow macerator pump connected to a toilet in an ensuite. The problem is that the (very) noisy motor keeps springing into life every 15 minutes or so, even at night! Is this normal? Are they meant to do this? I'd imagine that they should only...

    Gate valve mystery

I tried tightening but that briefly made things worse! I may have another go and see if I can stop the leak. If that doesn't work, any ideas on what to drain? I'm moving in January, so plan B may be to put a drip tray under it for now until it becomes someone elses problem!

    Gate valve mystery

I think I'm getting a better understanding here! Have a look at this link: http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/domestic_hot_water_systems.htm My system looks like the picture on the right (indirect cylinder): Pipe #3 is connected to the leaking gate valve and pipe #4 to the 3-way...

    Gate valve mystery

I may be about to show my ignorance but.... My hot water cylinder has (amongst others) two pipes of interest: one exiting mid-way up and connecting to a 3-way electronic valve that's wired to my boiler timer and the other exiting at the bottom and linking up to the middle down pipe of the...

    Sealed System Radiator Replacement

Mine didn't blow at 3.5 bar after the nice man from BG left the filler loop open. Sadly the compression joints around the pump blew instead and flooded the attic room and my newly decorated bedroom below!

British Gas - don't you love 'em

Had my boiler serviced under a BG service contract last week. I have a feeling the engineer was having a bad day as: (1) He fell down our stairs and smashed the light switch (when he conveniently forgot to tell us about) and (2) Left the fill tap open on our sealed central heating system...

    Novice...shower screen problems!

I have just installed a very similar bath (from Homebase made by Jacuzzi). Two things: (1) Are you sure the bath is level? This impacts the bottom seal as it will be tight in parts and loose in others. With the screen in place, try pushing down on the seal to ensure it is tight against...

Smooth finish on old paint work

I live in a turn of the century terraced house and some of the paintwork is decidedly shoddy - peeling and flaking in a number of places. Underneath the paint there are numerous layers of old paint. The base layers are a lovely shade of green and I image they contain a healthy quantity of...

    Stainless Steel Tubing

Florescent orange - now you're talking! ChrisR above would absolutely love that! Would it clash with the stainless steel toilet brush though?

    Stainless Steel Tubing

We are all getting very creative now! Fitting wouldn't be a problem: the pipes go through the bath panel, so I'd disconnect these, slide on the stainless 'sleeve' and the slide back after reconnecting. For neatness though, I think the boxing in option may be back on the agenda - at least...

    Stainless Steel Tubing

An interesting view point. I like the industrial chic idea. Perhaps it's because I own a titanium bike and consequently have a thing about tubing in it's natural state! Each to their own I suppose.......

    Stainless Steel Tubing

I'm on the home straight as far as finishing my bathroom project goes and one of the last things to do is hide two sections of horizontal exposed pipework: the waste from the toilet and the waste from a sink. I had planned to box them in and tile over them but then had the idea of encasing...

Filling point for additives - sealed CH system.

I've just replaced a radiator on my sealed system which involved draining and refilling the system. I need to top up the rust inhibitor but can't work out how to get it into the system! What will a filling point look like and where is it likely to be?

    Floor tile spacing (grout width)

What an interesting debate! I went for 4mm gaps and light grey grout. Looks lovely if I do say so myself!

    Dimming Halogen Spot Lights

I've just had four 240v spot lights installed by an electrician on a dimmer switch. When they are dimmed, they buzz like a swarm of angry wasps! Is this normal or is something wrong with the installation such as the switch not being up to the load?

    Bathroom Spot Lights

I'm about to install some spot lights in the ceiling of my bathroom, one of which will be above the shower. Do they have to be low voltage or can I use 240v versions? If low voltage, can I run multiple spots off one transformer? Also what is the typical wattage of a low voltage halogen bulb?

    Heavy Glass Shower Screen

It's a Jacuzzi one from Homebase. Annoyingly they also predrilled (very large) tap holes in the back corner. Consequently every time you turn the shower on, it's impossible to get out of the way without getting soaked! It was also a pain trying to waterproof the large gaps around the tap...

    Heavy Glass Shower Screen

I have just fitted one of those P-shaped shower baths and am about to fit the curved glass screen above the bath. The screen will be fitted to a tiled wall which is plastered brick behind. The 3 raw plugs and screws supplied seem incredibly puny to hold such a weight - I'd say they were...

    Floor tile spacing (grout width)

I'm about to tile my bathroom floor with 33.3cm square ceramic tiles. Simple question - what spacing (i.e width of grout line) will look best in my (very) small bathroom? I've got 7mm spacers but I have a feeling these will be too large? Any suggestions on what the "standard" is?
