    Rendering Too Thin

I am looking at a new house and noted a small piece of render that has become detached. Also, an area around this about 100mm in diameter is also hollow. To me, the render coat seems very thin and more of a cosmetic finish. I would appreciate any thoughts, specifically on whether this is...

    Broken Bath Overflow

Thanks guys. I've ordered another waste kit. While it still needs connected from the back, as said I can use the pipe as a wand - the one I've ordered has a long thread on the part that fixes through the hole to the cup so I might be able to catch the cup on the back. Here's hoping.

    Broken Bath Overflow

All Help! My (large) bath has an overflow to the centre rear. When turning the overflow, the plug pops up. A few weeks ago the external part of the overflow came off when I turned it to operate the plug. This should be a simple case of screwing it back in but I can't get any purchase...

    Central heating help

Hello I'm not trying to make you believe it, just trying to figure it out myself. Not being a heating engineer I'm confused. To be fair saying the tank is full of water is over-egging it - there's about a foot of water in the bottom of the tank. We dipped a stick in it and water with a...

    Central heating help

Thanks for the reply. No second immersion that I could see (and only one MCB for one on the board). The strange thing is that there is a temperature control on the boiler and when Dad turned it up the hot water became hotter shortly after. When running hot water the boiler pump seems...

    Central heating help

All Trying to get my head around a central heating system, and need some help please. My parents have moved into a temporary let, which has a system boiler. There is an oil fired boiler in the kitchen, hot water tank and header tank in the bedroom cupboard above and oil tank outside...

    Best floor tile adhesive

Now I am in the realms of guesswork! The tiles look old enough to be original do I'd guess clay. I think the screed is latex but I'd have to check with the builder. Only thing I can see about the tiles is they are "large format ceramic" Thanks again

    Best floor tile adhesive

Thanks for the replies. The floor is concrete, covered in old quarry tiles which has then been self levelling screeded. We only actually screeded as we were going to put vinyl down but then she saw some fancy Victorian style tiles in Topps! The tiles are 450mm square. Thanks

    Best floor tile adhesive

All I've done a fair bit of wall tiling in the past, but need to do my first floor tiling job. I was just wondering what the best adhesive to use is? From what I can see on the web, B&Q's are terrible, Wickes' own brand had pretty good write ups (but I'm a bit dubious of 'big shed' stuff...

    Ducting cooker hood

Hello What's the best way of ducting a cooker hood externally? I can't decide between rigid ducting and flexi although flexi looks much cheaper. Is there much of a difference? Thanks Alan

Solid Wood Flooring - Around Chimney Breast

Thanks again for the reply. They're perpendicular to the side wall I'm afraid. As you look at the rear of the side wall (which i can see as it is the access to the cellar) the short ends of the boards are visible. These rest on perpendicular joists (that are parallel with the side wall) which...

Solid Wood Flooring - Around Chimney Breast

Thanks Symptoms. Very good plan about the battening at datum point. I can't lift the current floorboards unfortunately as the the side wall is actually built off them in typical Victorian fashion. As such I can't take them out without de-stabling the wall. Any thoughts on how I can best...

Solid Wood Flooring - Around Chimney Breast

Hello, and thanks for the reply. It's on old Victorian floorboards. They're not too bad but not exactly level. Thanks

Solid Wood Flooring - Around Chimney Breast

All I have some 18mm solid wood flooring to install in the dining room. Couple of questions please: 1. The furthest corner from the door (where I need to start) is to one side of the old fire hearth (about half the width of the room). I have 150mm boards but the depth of the fire place is...

    Tiling around a window

As part of a kitchen refub, I am tiling around the kitchen window opening. The window has timber arcs, casings and a timber window board. I am tiling a splashback and want to tile into the window opening, but am unsure what to do with the arcs and casings around the window. Can these be cut...

    Fitting intergrated appliances

All I'm looking to change out a few kitchen cabinets and need to keep the layout due to the size of the kitchen. I will be installing an integrated fridge and dishwasher but the side face of both will be visible. As such I need to cover them up. There is no way of containing them in a...

    Fixing joist hangers

Hello I'm looking at rectifying a sagging floor by sistering the existing joists with new. As the sleeper wall at mid span is part demolished the intention is to fit new (bigger) joists that will span the full width without the need for the sleeper wall (about 3.2m). The intention is to...

    Defective Sleeper Wall

All Grateful for some builder's input. The floor in our dining room slopes toward the centre of the room and there are a few areas that appear slightly 'soft'. The floor is covered in Karndean so i haven't yet lifted it to figure out what's going on. The dining room floor is a timber...
