My issue with thermo rad valves

Thanks everyone, especially Eric for the extensive explanation. (Incidentally, I did look at electronic TRVs but only found Tado ones and can't afford those prices. So I can confirm the lockshields are all wide open, and that's my doing - and my misunderstanding. I assume the TRVs would control...

My issue with thermo rad valves

In my home I have one radiator that rarely gets hot and unfortunately it's in the lounge. When the heating comes on there are some radiators that heat up immediately, others take a bit more time but do get there, and this one in the lounge never seems to get hot. It gets warm, but that's it...

    Self-build garden office cost saving?

Thanks everyone. One of my concerns is structural life. There are posh sheds (see this example) which are around £4k. They seems quite solid, but only if you buy the expensive options (cedar cladding, mdf interior walls). I was hoping I could make one myself, adapt some online plans for a...

    Self-build garden office cost saving?

I'm thinking of installing a garden office, about 10"x8". Posh sheds are around £4k with decent insulation and weather protection. However I'm quite handy so I'm keen to consider building my own. If we assume my time is free, just how much could I save by building my own from scratch? I'm a bit...

Yep, I must be mad! [pics]

Close - these are Ivory country style units from B&Q :) (Note - never buy from B&Q, I certainly won't... again) Haven't touched the gas at all, have a CORGI engineer doing that and certifying everything for me. Boiler is up and running - man it's nice to be warm again! :D Had been living...

Where to put shower - Any clever ideas?

Stupidly, I've put my bath in the wrong way around. I've recently replaced an old bath suite with new. I replaced everything in it in the same way that the old suite was installed without checking first that there would a convenient (and aesthetic) way to include the shower from the mixer taps...

Peculiar central heating: upstairs hot, downstairs cold!

Thanks Dave! :D I'll drain the system in the morning and get that sucker out. I take it turning it upside down would be stupid, so instead I'll make up a short stub of 22mm to bridge the gap. Yes, the valve is certainly wide open! :D Cheers again!

Peculiar central heating: upstairs hot, downstairs cold!

As I have no idea what a checkvalve/antigravity valve looks like, I took this photograph of something I've found that I can't identify. Is this the culprit perhaps? It sits in the vertical runs near the old boiler. Zoom:

Peculiar central heating: upstairs hot, downstairs cold!

Just had my new combi boiler turned on for first time this evening after kind CORGI man turned on gas for me. Lots of lovely hot water, but my radiators are misbehaving. A bit of history: I've been renovating this house, which has an old oil fired system still waiting to be ripped out. The...

    Hole for pipe through wall

...for a laugh, thought I'd report on how I managed to increase size of the hole :D First of all, had no way of creating a dowel of wood large enough to sit in the existing 25mm hole (and didn't fancy hand sawing a circle out of mdf), so I took the 38mm diamond core drill straight to the...

    Hole for pipe through wall

Cheers everyone. Seems I'll give the 38mm core bit a go. Will try to pack hole with a 25mm dowel or similar to give the pilot something to bite, otherwise will have to use sheer determination to keep it straight :)

    Hole for pipe through wall

I got this 22mm copper pipe, sitting in a 25mm hole in my cavity wall. But it needs to be sleeved, see. So I need to make a bigger hole, right? But you can't get masonry bits any bigger than 32mm (from ScrewFix anyway, and even that one's a special). I got a diamond core cutting set for...

Do you need an E cloth for a new kitchen?

You wanted to know if I'm happy with my B&Q kitchen. I guess if forced to come to an overall conclusion, I'd say "not". Firstly, it arrived in two stages, which was annoying. Secondly, the range has been terminated, so spares are not an option anymore. Thirdly, ALL the colour matched ends had...

Yep, I must be mad! [pics]

The box directly on the left of the hob is the cooker switched FCU, and the one directly on the right is the extractor FCU. No sockets. No flexes :) I'm not trained, scousespark, but very good at research (am a researcher by trade) and feel I've checked each and every reg thoroughly. Maybe...

Yep, I must be mad! [pics]

Wow. Well, we finally got the house in October, months later than we expected  , and my wife (with baby) already moved to her dad's place back in September, so it's been a long time without them already. However, I've been getting stuck in, and made some real progress with the...

Do you need an E cloth for a new kitchen?

Hmmm, having just praised B&Q for what seems a good price on a new kitchen, have just learnt that they've put back my delivery date by another two weeks. No reasons, no excuses, no apologies. I only found out because I was calling them to double check the delivery address, and the lady on the...

Do you need an E cloth for a new kitchen?

Shame to hear B&Q are trying to con people this way. I've just recently bought a new kitchen from them, but I told them exactly what I wanted, not the other way around. Got a good price. Just hope the quality of the kitchen is good too...

Yep, I must be mad! [pics]

OK, finally got the survey report in. Nothing too much to worry about, didn't reveal anything I didn't already suspect. Surveyor questioned the electrics, suspected issues with the waste pipes and virtually condemned the oil boiler. I'm not surprised though, it certainly looks as old as the...

My DIY Kitchen Install :: Pics included

Hi, I'm about to start fitting a new kitchen too, your helpful hints are great. Unfortunately your pics don't appear anymore, have you removed them? I'd like to see your kitchen if you can provide the pics again :) Also, you talked about joining the worktops with a short 45 degree angle, then...
