    Electric cable in footings

Thanks for the useful replies guys. Our house (and the identical house next door) were built in the mid 70's in the back garden of a much older house. This is turn was demolished and two new houses were built in its place in the late 90's. From the amount of rubble we have found there may...

    Electric cable in footings

Good evening, We're excavating the footings for our extension and have come across a cable buried about 18 inches down. The cable runs from a plastic pipe, through what looks like a length of cast iron drain pipe (!) and back into a plastic pipe. The cable is thinner than my little finger...

    Building Regs requirements

Thanks again Guys Our kitchen is also at the bottom of the stairs but we do have a closable door. I think I'll see how much it will cost to get the alarms installed (and how much money we've got left!) when we get the electrician in. If its too expensive and/or we can't afford it...

    Building Regs requirements

Mmmmm thanks Guys, The drawings have now been submitted for approval but it seems my architect is a little over-zealous... :? It's a 2 story house and we're having a single story extension to enlarge the kitchen. The architect has specified smoke alarms in the hallway downstairs and on...

    Building Regs requirements

Thanks FMT Spoke to the architect yesterday and he said the interlinked alarms are required by our local authority building control. TBH I think I'll just take his word for it - the alarms are not a bad thing and shouldn't add too much to the cost (although we are watching every penny!) I...

    Building Regs requirements

Good morning, We've received planning permission for our small (3m x 3m) single story kitchen extension. We're going for a full plans application and the architect has sent us the first draft of the drawings to be submitted for Building Regs approval. I'm going to give him a call on Monday...

    Dewalt batteries

Thanks Guys! I "only" paid £149 although I didn't tell SWMBO that  It's only for DIY use although I've got a big project coming up soon (extension and new kitchen which I hope to be doing a lot of myself) so I thought it would be useful to get a spare battery. I didn't think...

    Party Wall Notice Required?

We've applied for planning permission for a 3m x 3m extension on the side of the house. The planning drawings were professionally drawn and I've just noticed they say "Client to conform to Party Wall Act if required" with a link to...

    B and Q Kitchens

We're considering a B&Q kitchen. Is there any differnce between the Cooke and Lewis ones which have to be ordered from B&Q and the IT ones which are stocked in store? The specs look very similar although the IT ones are a bit cheaper. We would prefer to pick it up from the store to...

Fixing gate post to brick house wall

I went with the frame fixings in the end as I'd already bought them. It's an iron gate for access to the side of the house and will be kept locked most of the time. It seems strong enough but if necessary I'll try one of the other methods suggested. Thanks to all who replied.

Fixing gate post to brick house wall

Thanks Guys, Catlad - By "Thunder bolts" I assume you mean the fixings that don't need a plug, something like: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Screws+Fixings/Frame+Fixings/Masonry+Frame+Fixing+Screw+75mm+x+132mm/d90/sd1950/p86493 ? I've already bought the frame fixings so I'll try with...

Advice on Flat Plate Switches and Sockets

Thanks for the advice guys - I knew it wouldn't be straightforward  At the risk of sounding ungrateful - is it a big job is it to sink deeper boxes (35mm?) into the wall? The walls are all block so I assume I: 1) Turn power off and remove existing socket and back box. 2)...

Advice on Flat Plate Switches and Sockets

Good Afternoon! We're in the process of redecorating our hall, stairs and landing and SWMBO has decided we "need" brushed chrome flat plate switches and sockets. There are 2 single switched sockets and 3 light switches (1 x one gang, 1 x two gang and 1 x three gang). We've had a look on...
