Advice on staircase prep and DIY painting pls

What ^^^ dhutch said! In answer to your questions: 1) Two options - use a sander with dust extraction and/or use a green saucepan scourer - you can use the scourer with a cleaning spray etc so it also acts as a degreaser, if you go to home bargains you can get stardrops spray for £1 and it's...

Best brilliant white eggshell for interior woodwork

Thanks, I've been meaning to lay my hands on some floetrol for a while now. I'll report back on the durability of the Albany paint as it's on the handrails of our stair case now...

What filler can I use over plastic cable ducting?

OK a couple of ideas: Use a two part filler such as isopon p38 (car body filler) or ronseal high performance wood filler...

Best brilliant white eggshell for interior woodwork

We're in the process of doing a lot of decorating at home and what we're using is Albany super satin - it's a water based acrylic but it does flow nicely...according to the bloke in brewers it's basically crown fast flow paint. As above go for trade, don't bother with consumer market stuff...

    Masking Tape

The Wooster silvertip brushes are cheap enough in SF etc. 3 for £14 iirc - still way better than some of the brushes I've tried from the sheds!

    Bits for a Drill/Driver

I've only once managed to break a bit when using a drill/driver - it was a very well used bosch ACR pz2 that balked finally at removing a 6" screw that was rusted into hardwood. I've subsequently used dewalt and wera bits - the wera ones will last longer but I tend to save them for use with...

    MIG Welder?

With 'Gasless' AFAIK the gas comes from the flux in the weld wire, the result is not as neat as 'proper' MIG but does have some advantages also.

    MIG Welder?

Thanks John, yeah I've no doubt the Lidl machine will stick metal together and I'm happy to have a machine that'll do flux-cored but I'd like the potential to add a gas bottle and get a better finish and have more flexibility in what it can do...I'm a total novice at the moment but don't really...

    MIG Welder?

Folks any recommendations on a cheap gas/no gas MIG welder? I know Lidl have a parkside flux cored machine in at the moment for £80 but it can't use gas (without a different gun) and from what I've read may struggle with thinner materials compared to a gas MIG machine.

    Dog gnawed door frame

No problem - can't remember the name of the chemical but basically they use the same stuff in hairspray that is used in professional mould release sprays - just at a lower concentration iirc.

    Dog gnawed door frame

I've had exactly this problem except quite a bit worse (puppy damage!) I used ronseal 2-part filler - you need something like that as it's tough, a normal interior filler won't hold up on exposed door frame edges. In terms of the profile of the architrave I took a mould of some good architrave...

Help with Crown matt emulsion (dries different colour with brush to roller)

I've had this problem with Dulux diamond matt recently - the weather is really not helping! I seem to have got round it by inventing 'Bikram Decorating' raising the humidity in the room (downstairs cloakroom) by closing all the doors/windows & putting a big tub of hot water in there - yes the...

Polyurethane wood glue instead of chemical fixing for thermalite blocks?

Lidl have got araldite sized syringes of polyester filler in at the moment if you just need a bit - to be honest I think you'd be better off whanging a load of nemesis/sticks like sh*t/pinkgrip solvent free in the hole and pushing the rod into that - It'll have more strength than PU glue. If the...

    Best Water-based Satinwood

OK so I've got an update on the below - went into Brewers and they recommended the Albany version which according to them was basically the same as the Crown fast flow paint. All I can say is it does the job - application is a bit weird for a diy'er; rollering it on with a medium pile roller...

    Best Water-based Satinwood

Morning folks I know this has been covered before but things seem to change a lot in terms of formulations these days - just a quick question, what’s the preferred water-based white satin wood paint at the moment? I’ve tried the Dulux and found it a bit of a pain in application, Armstead...
