    What kind of hinges

End fixing would be a bad idea. But will the piano hinge like being vertical carrying weight of panel? Could I use Zysa hinges but mounted into the inner face? Door and panel in line when hinge is open, and folded insides together when hinge closed?

    What kind of hinges

That makes sense. Piano hinge was my first thought then I looked at the hardware catalogs and got confused. Only concern is with securing it to particle board, made me think some kind of inserted disc hinge could be better if I could find one that folded right. The medial flap hinges I found...

    What kind of hinges

I want to add a narrow hinged vertical panel to the side of a tall cabinet door, but not sure what kind of hinge will do the job. Without describing the whole project the idea is for the panel to lie along side and be connected to the 2m door making it wider, but fold in flat when the door is...

Making fine tilth for seeding new lawn

Soil is open and well turned over by 6T digger, drains OK but has clods on the surface from the digging. Jut need a clod buster! Tried the plank (weighed down with blocks), can see it would help with leveling but does nothing for the clods. When light it just bounces over the top, with weights...

Making fine tilth for seeding new lawn

Thanks for the advice. The landscape rake I ordered has just arrived broken so now I am awaiting a replacement. Yet to discover what I can achieve with manual raking. Meanwhile the clods seem to be multiplying as everything settles and looks more like a moon scape. I do feel overwhelmed by the...

Making fine tilth for seeding new lawn

I have a freshly dug and graded (by JCB excavator) 30m x 45m area of top soil that I want to prepare for grass seed. It is generally level but has lots of fist sized clumps of soil on top that need breaking up first. Stamping on them or manual hoeing is going to be a long job given the size of...

Painting Flush Doors with Waterbased Gloss

Finally beaten, just could not get a good finish on flush doors with Leyland Trade Acrylic Gloss despite trying everything suggested (except the Floetrol that I could not source). As a non-stir (gell like) water based paint it would not stay wet enough or flow enough for large surfaces. Went...

Painting Flush Doors with Waterbased Gloss

Loving my new brush, but adding water was a bad idea the paint formed stringy lumps that I only noticed once I started putting the paint on. Note to those who may try this: adding water to a quick drying water based non-stir gloss paint is a disaster. I guess that it is thixotropic...

Painting Flush Doors with Waterbased Gloss

I have purchased a decent 3" synthetic brush, will see what I can do with that all all the other tips tomorrow and report back. Have not been able to source any extender, neither Floetrol nor xmin, in West Cornwall, any suggestions for where I can get it? Meanwhile wondering about simply...

    undercoat

Doesn't it say on the tin? If the brush washes clean in water then it is WB, if you get in a right mess in the attempt then it is OB. Coming from a family that never throws things away I have used older paint than that (with various degrees of success). If the tin isn't solid then it is useable.

Painting Flush Doors with Waterbased Gloss

Thanks dcdec. What size would you recommend? I am tempted by 5" to get the paint on fast but perhaps they will be too big to lay off nicely? Do they effect the whiteness? Will do. Yes, working on a budget, but so far the Leyland has been easy to work with just the flush doors where I have come...

Painting Flush Doors with Waterbased Gloss

Having difficulty getting a good finish using WB gloss (Leyland Trade Acrylic Gloss - pink tin) on flush doors. I've done the skirtings, architrave and 250mm deep window ledges with the stuff all quite nicely, what good paint I thought, but now it comes to the doors it is Hell! What is the...

    Painting over rusty plaster bead

Since no one else has commented here's a go... In a similar situation decorating with rusty corners beads, builder told me they usually paint over with oil-based undercoat. Failing that use a (more expensive) stain stopper paint or one of the Zinnser range, some are much quicker drying than...

Filling screw head holes in MDF and wood

So many holes to do that a slower drying filler would be fine, I'm not going to be back with paint until the next day at least. Easy to sand and less likely to blow/pop are priorities. Sounds like 2 part and ready mixed wood filler are both hard to rub down, yet car body filler is easier? The...

Filling screw head holes in MDF and wood

Thanks for the quick rsponses. In my situation it is more likely that the MDF dries out and contracts leaving the filler sticking out. I have had that happen with holes in MDF window ledges that I filled with joint cement. MDF does seem to suck in any damp, and my new build is still drying...

Filling screw head holes in MDF and wood

I have hundreds of screw head holes in both MDF (skirting boards) and new timber (door sets) to fill and prep before painting. What filler do I use that will give good long lasting results and be easy to use? The ease of dry wall joint cement is temping, but worried it won't last and tends to...

New staircase with uneven fillets any way to fix

Not glue, looking at an off cut of rail and spare fillets (that came precut so too small to plane) they are just 2mm deeper than the groove. The carpenter simply fitted what was provided. With hindsight I would ask the stair company for different fillet material, but too late now. Same under...

New staircase with uneven fillets any way to fix

Have had a new pine staircse fitted intending to paint and carpet it, but I'm not happy with it. The fillets in the base rail between each baluster protrude 1 or 2mm above the rail whereas I would have expected them to be flush with the rail. They came with the staircase and were nailed and...

Painting MDF now that emsulsion paint is not vinyl

Want to paint some MDF and wondering what to use. Around 8 years ago I painted MDF that I had made into cabinet carcasses using vinyl silk emulsion. I worked well, the surface still looks great and wears well any marks being easily washed off with soap and water. The emulsion was standard Dulux...

Fitting Semi-Recessed Sink onto Slimline Vanity Unit

Ah, so this is a carpentry problem not a plumbing one? Don't want to cross post, any way to move forums? But it must be a carpentry problem that plumbers have seen the solution for surely.
