    Damp identification help

That wall that you can see is a partition separating two rooms of what used to be an old brick outhouse. The original outhouse was built in the 1700s, and was converted into living space in 2010. There obviously wasn't any damp proofing originally and unfortunately I don't have a record of what...

    Damp identification help

Hi, New house, uncovering various things. Could anyone help with this damp? Not sure if the pattern indicates what is causing it. Also not sure if it's historic or recent as we've only been here a couple of weeks. The "damp" only appears to be on the end of the threshold, and not on either side...

Bosch dishwasher water hammer mid cycle

Hi, just moved into a house and have inherited a Bosch Serie 2 Silence Plus. It is indeed silent for most of the three hour cycle, until the point there's about 1 hour 40 left in the display. At that point there's a repeated pattern of what sounds like the machine filling followed by an...

    Decent controller for Vaillant

Hi, Just moved into a new house that has a Vaillant VRT350F and frankly I'm disappointed with it. Its only possible to set two temperatures, a day temp and a fallback temp for night time. I want a wireless controller that let's me set different temperatures at different times of day. Can...

Are builders and tradesman snowed under at the moment?

People can't spend thousands on holidays, so they spend it on the house instead.

    Changing eurocylinder

Hi, I'm going to attempt to change the eurocylinder locks in a pair of patio doors. One side looks easy, as I can see the screw that needs removing to release the lock. However, I'm not sure where the corresponding screw is on the other door. I've attached a photo, can anyone help me out?

    Grout repair

I noticed I had a small amount of grout missing in the shower when I was cleaning it yesterday. The shower is eight years old, and I'm assuming it's just eroded over time, but correct me if I'm wrong. What's the best way to repair this? 1) Scrape out the grout and replace, or 2) Force some...

    Can this be repointed?

Summary of investigation was "...consistent with minor settlement of the lintel..." There was no evidence that it is related to foundation movement. The solution is to either repoint now or later. As we are looking at selling the advise was to leave for now for the reasons @KenGMac...

    Can this be repointed?

Whilst I wait for NHBC, I was wondering if there was any obvious reason for this type of crack. I've read that subsidence/ heave tend to be wider at one end whereas these are widest in the middle of the diagonal, and hairline at the ends. Fully appreciate it may not be possible to analyse on...

    Can this be repointed?

Thanks for all the replies so far. I've spoken to NHBC as the house is only seven years old so hopefully they will be able to help out. I got up the ladder and measured, the cracks are 2mm wide, so a bit more than hairline!

    Can this be repointed?

So I guess that's the next question. There are no corresponding cracks inside, I have looked in the upstairs bedroom and the plasterboard is fine. It's a seven year old new build, and the cracks have been there for at least four years though it's hard to see if they are getting better or...

    Can this be repointed?

I posted a couple of years ago about some mortar cracks that we have. I've attached an up to date picture where you can see the step crack between the door and the window. I want to get this fixed, so is it just a repoint or something else? Which trade should I engage? Thanks!

As an update, had a professional in who replaced with metal corners and replastered. Didn't trust myself to do it!

Air in hot water tap after no use for a few days.

Massively delayed reply. Turns out the utility room tap was leaking in a non obvious spot. Isolated that before going away and no issue upon return. Now just need to replace the tap.

    Ideal Logic case rusting. Leak?

It turned out to be a cracked sump. Common problem apparently.
