    Locating tilers?

Our shower is currently leaking into our kitchen. The loss assessor from the insurance company has identified tiles that have become unstuck from the wall, poor and cracked grouting and badly applied sealant as the problems. He recommended an over-haul of the existing tiling rather than...

    External Wall Insulation

We have a very cold 1906 semi with solid brick walls. I am looking at insulation solutions, particularly for the walls. Not DIY, will get in specialist contractor. There is a long (12m long by 7m high) flank wall along the side alley in permanent shade. This is in need of repointing and...

    5A lighting circuit, connect L and N or L, N and earth?

Agree this would be the best option, but we will be getting the house comprehensively rewired in a few months (when the bonus comes in!). Most of the sockets and switches seem to date from the 1970's, there aren't enough of them and the fuse box is positively ancient. We will be replacing the...

    5A lighting circuit, connect L and N or L, N and earth?

That is not disimilar to what I bought, two terminals in, two terminals out - which is what initially confused me and why I assumed the earth was not needed. What I actually got was one of these but with two connecting blocks rather than three. Slighlty annoyed at B&Q at selling the...

    5A lighting circuit, connect L and N or L, N and earth?

Sorry, not sure what you mean by this. Googled it and just found socket extension leads!

    5A lighting circuit, connect L and N or L, N and earth?

Thanks both. Not what I wanted to hear, but want to do the job properly. The floor in question is bare sanded and varnished floorboards screwed down onto the joists, so the wiring blocks will be accessible if necessary, but not exposed to casual meddling.

    5A lighting circuit, connect L and N or L, N and earth?

Had a nasty short in a 5A lighting circuit in our new house. Fuse was blowing weekly. The end of an old steel pipe under the bathroom floor was cutting into the cable supplying the kitchen ceiling lights every time someone stepped on a floor board. Took us a while to work out what was...

Wet wall (now sorted) re-point now or later?

Fair enough. Looking at various cost estimates elsewhere on these boards (£20+ psm plus scaffolding) though, I won't be able to afford it until about March next year - so will have to hope weather is not too wet over winter :-/

Wet wall (now sorted) re-point now or later?

Long preamble but short question (bear with me!): Just bought a 1906 London semi. It had an overflowing gutter on the wall onto the side alley. This was caused by a couple of slipped tiles at the eaves blocking the gutter, a general build up of muck blocking downpipe and a creeper...

    slipped tiles - temporary fix

Glue! Now why did I not think of that? Probably because I wouldn't have known what glue to buy. Thanks for the advice.

    slipped tiles - temporary fix

Two (plain clay) tiles slipped out of place on the edge of my roof and bridged the gutter. Consequently water coming off the roof was pouring down the side of the house and soaking the wall. I have been up and tried to reposition the tiles but the nibs have broken off and they won't hook over...

WC - loads of water, poor flush.

No, there is a window just above the cistern and no sign of brackets over the window. I just thought a previous owner might have wrongly installed the toilet - using a high level cistern and pan in a low level configuration. The fact that the poo appears almost to be hammered flat might...

WC - loads of water, poor flush.

Just moved to a new house with a rather old downstairs WC. It is a large low level cistern connected by a pipe to the back of the pan. When we flush the loo there is a huge deluge of water into the pan, I would reckon about 15 litres or more. The water comes out fast and is reasonably well...
