    6mm ply over existing floorboards

Thanks, this much I fathomed although the advice was provided by quite a big underlay trade company who I initially contacted about silentfloor... So, ply over floorboards is do-able; what's the best way to fix it i.e. what type of screw?

    6mm ply over existing floorboards

Hi, I've been advised to nail 6mm ply over the top of existing floorboards before having underlay and carpet fitted. I originally ask them for a sound insulating solution and proposed they use a laminate underlay under Cloud 9 underlay - the ply board solution is what they came back...

keeping rollers overnight without cleaning them

Hi, I am in the process of painting a room but can only do it in the evenings so no chance of finishing all in one go. What's the best way of storing rollers loaded with paint overnight? I've tried clingfilm, didn't work out badly, but was wondering if there is any other way? Cheers...

    The Part P scam

Pg 290, readers digest DIY manual, I would be interested in your critique of the text. I am particularly fond of the diagram showing 1 cable running from the CU, through a control unit to the back of the Oven/Cooker. But my favourite has to be the box "Understading an electric cooker circuit"...

    The Part P scam

Yes, 2 electricians, as I said 1 first, then the other. I contacted 1, got a quote and gave go ahead. Didn't pitch, couldn't contact him. Fine, move on. Got second quote, same process. I am not in the habit of arguing about work of this nature. The quote did not seem unreasonable, it is a...

    The Part P scam

Where to begin; If you read my post it says "I'm not saying that sparks are dishonest but...there are a cowboys." Are you saying there aren't MOT's who con people into replacing things they don't need? Anyway, it's a tangent, I shall leave it at that. Not sure how you concluded that I am...

    The Part P scam

By charging £190 for a notification and inspection they will encourage a great deal of people to either not bother or go around the rules. Yes, the work I am doing is notifiable as it is in the kitchen - it's adding a spur off the CU for the oven/gas hob ignition. What I have seen...

    The Part P scam

I sympathise. I moved back to the country 2 yrs ago and only recently bought a house so this is all news to me... So the question would be; what are the consequences of not notifying. Obviously I am not advocating that anyone shouldn't, I'd just like to know what happens... My greatest...

    electric oven

Mine quoted £190 - you can see my bleat on the other post... I've calmed down a bit and don't want to muddy the OP's thread. I gracefully bow out.

And your local authority will shaft your for a £190 for that experience.

    The Part P scam

So, I've enquired of my local council how I can go about getting my work certified (I haven't started yet). They tell me that I need to fill out a form and pay £190 and then they appoint an electrician to come out and inspect and do whatever they do and then they'll issue a certificate...

Dulux Matt Emulsion - brush or roller?

As per the title, is it better to use a roller or a brush? It's a big room and doing the ceiling. If roller, which length of pile, should I water down, how many coats etc? If I use a brush, should I expect to use a lot more paint? Thanks in advance. :D P.S. The colour will be Mellow...

    seeking reassurance

So where does this leave your average Joe DIY'er? I am sure many, like me, have some interest in making sure their work is in order but if the regs, manufacturers and sparks are at odds then is it any wonder people get fed up and does as they like? How are these regulations brought in...

    seeking reassurance

I'm afraid I'd disagree with you on your first point. The manufacturer is clearly stating that this product is fit for purpose and they clearly state that purpose as being for the joining of cables in inaccessible locations. This is still governed by the Sale of Goods act.

    seeking reassurance

There is a link to the a guide/brochure at the bottom of the page I provided the link to in an earlier thread. In it is a product selection guide. Is the location accessible? No. Maintenance free terminals required. The next page has a selection chart which categorically states that...

    seeking reassurance

My concern is that what I am doing must be safe. In so far as the regs govern that, I am happy to comply. Where, however, the regs have been developed by a collection of jobsworths seeking to guarentee a stream of income with little or no real impact on the safety or longevity of electrics...

    seeking reassurance

A regulation which is not clearly defined, slightly impractical and open to interpretation... sacre bleu! The cables are in a conduit, it's just not big enough for 2 cables. The existing CU is an old type - I've replaced the fuses with plug in MCB's but am planning to upgrade it...

    seeking reassurance

Thank you both. So the only potentially hinky thing is the junction box under the floor... Thing is, I've just had the wall skimmed and am by no means keen on trying to open the hole up anymore and risk busting the plaster :( I accept it might not be best practice but as I mention it is...

Hi, I am in the process of rennovating my lounge and have take the opportunity to sink the surface mounted electrics into the walls as well as move and add some sockets. What I have done is move 1 double socket to another wall and added a single spur for the wall mounted TV. The double...

    mist coat

Thanks for the re-assurance, that clarifies it for me. :) The variety of paints on offer is confusing before you get into the contradictory advice (PVA/Don't PVA) or (15% too little 25% too much water etc)...
