    Scaffolding scam?

Build the tower, diagonals to stop it racking, tighten it all up and bob’s you uncle. I guess. Plus I’ll be putting some outriggers on and bolting to the wall. Has to be better than my 2x4 chimney scaffold I built held to the chimney by ratchet straps. I’m still here!

    Cheers for the recommendation

    Scaffolding scam?

Fully understand your concerns Bernard. I do however have a couple of mates who would help me. They used to scaffold many years ago. It is a fall from grace rather than height I'm currently concerned about.

    Scaffolding scam?

I think I’ve already got my suspicions….. But hear me out and give me some ideas on how to protect myself….. In the next few weeks I’m going to want to scaffold half the rear of my house in preparation for me to loft convert. Being a miser, I don’t want to pay for hire, so like I often do, I...

I’d certainly do that. So you basically saying Ian H did a slapdash job….. you pay peanuts….

    Loft conversion insulation

I think I’ve been shifted away from the foil stuff. as for the osb under the rafters…. What are you suggesting? 100mm pir between joists…. Then what? 50mm pir then osb? Sounds like a lot of weight…. But might cure Ian’s noise issue.

    Loft conversion insulation

Really? I thought it would being quite dense. You got any ideas on how you’d do it different?

    Loft conversion insulation

That chap in the video recons that space foil blanket is equivalent to 100mm PIR. Find that hard to believe. But I like the space ship look!

    Loft conversion insulation

Stripping and retiling the roof is not really on the agenda. It’s a monster task that I don’t have the appetite for. Especially as the roof is in good order and currently leak free. Understand this would be the ideal gold standard, but not sure I have the motivation. It’s been solid for 100...

Understand this. Hot in summer, cold in winter seem to be known issues

    Loft conversion insulation

Christ it’s hard going to get started! Won’t go into the architect/SE design saga as I’ll just work myself up. Must be a boom on as I can’t give my money away! It’s going to be self build so I’m using my energy to contemplate insulation. Getting mixed messages as to whether U values of the...

Recommend loft conversion designer West Midlands

I shall try and explain but will take pictures tomorrow as they speak a thousand words apparently. Detached house, gable ended one side, hipped the other. A gabled bay at the front and a smaller gable at the rear. 1925 traditional cut roof. Quite tall, 3m+ ridge height, 2 purlins supporting...

Recommend loft conversion designer West Midlands

It’s crunch time. After a couple of hours in my loft yesterday I’ve concluded that designing the structural elements of a loft conversion in my loft are beyond me. If I had a nice simple gable to gable house I’d have a bash. But I don’t. I’ve emailed a few designers/architects from a google...

    Loft conversion fire doors.

Christ. That’s a lot of smoke alarms. Equally as unappealing but thanks for the possible solution.

    Loft conversion fire doors.

Hmmmm…… I know this is the obvious route at a cost. Someone to design and calculate. But I’m the sort of person who hammers removed nails back straight.

    Loft conversion fire doors.

A solution? Bucket of water by each door? I’m full of issues with no solutions. Kind of got my head round the floor. The more I investigate this loft conversion malarkey, the more I’m wondering if it’s for me. I spent about 2 hours in my loft today mulling things over and poking around….. still...

    Loft conversion fire doors.

True. But they don’t stop me being miffed at replacing 10 old doors I like for doors I don’t want for £1.5k.

    Loft conversion fire doors.

This 20/30 minutes fire protection seems more than ample to me. Smoke alarms will go off with a wisp of smoke. I’d be out with the family in under a minute.

    Loft conversion fire doors.

Lord have mercy. So a knotted rope that can be slung out of a velux is not going to do. Worth exploring if my current doors cut the mustard. 2” thick solid wood. All those fire rated doors only work if they’re all shut every night. Ideal, but I bet most don’t.

    Loft conversion fire doors.

Just reading up on some regs and would like to check something. Regs say: All doors on loft must be fire doors (30 min rating) All doors on escape route must be fire rated. Now my property has a central stair well which I would continue into the loft (if and when I start). Basically every...
