    Skimming guidance required

I'm going to be doing a small area of skimming, so I've scanned through a lot of threads and picked up some pointers but was wondering if someone could kindly do a quick list of the stages involved from first coat to polishing off or whatever the correct term is. So far I understand that I...

New radiator and valves (TRV or not TRV)

I'm going to be replacing the radiator in my lounge and while I'm at it I'm fancying some nicer valves. At the moment their is TRV on the radiator but the lounge is the room with the thermostat in it (no hallway in my little terrace house) So my questions are: 1. Am I right in thinking I...

    Dimmer switch help please

yep, nothing out of the ordinary as far as I can tell. bog standard ceiling rose, bayonet fitting, bulb, one way switch. Nothing to it really so i don't know what the problem is. I might pick up a cheap plastic dimmer to see if i can get that to work, then I'll assume my current metal one is...

    Dimmer switch help please

    Dimmer switch help please

Right, I tried a 150w bulb and got the same problem. So I took the switch off and looked on the back and it says '60-400w' so that rules out any sort of power issue. Now, because the old dimmer i took off had different markings I don't know whether I've replaced the wires in the correct...

    Dimmer switch help please

not sure of the brand, I'm at work at the moment so can't have a look until tonight. not sure if there is a minimum wattage but I can look. It will be on the back of the dimmer right? I'm not using a energy saving bulb, but i have just bought a 150w bulb to try when i get home. If there is...

    Dimmer switch help please

I've browsed the forums but can't quite find the help I require. Basically I've replaced a very old rubbish plastic dimmer with a shiny new metal one. The old one had about 6 terminals in it just marked with numbers. It's just a one way switch (can you have 2 way dimmers?) so had a red and...

    metal plug socket problem

erm... what does that mean?! :? is there more to earthing than just getting continuity of earth around the circuit? what exactly do these soctet testers do then and is it worth bothering with them? surely a basic test is better than no test. I only want to put a metal socket on!

    metal plug socket problem

seems silly spending £20 for a tool i'll use once. connector block it is. thanks.

    metal plug socket problem

thanks for your input guys. do i need special pliers to create a crimp joint? are they cheap? if there is room for a connection block and i go down that road, do i need to worry about the amp rating of the connection block. i will definately get a socket tester and test the socket. I'll...

    repairing a dodgy mains cable

thanks. i'll investigate further. if it's crimped i'll leave it. if its not i'll use a junction box to make it safer.

    metal plug socket problem

I'm fitting new metal plug sockets in my lounge which isn't a problem as I've done it before. the problem is that the new metal sockets have a slightly different connection arrangement to the existing plastic ones, meaning that in one of the sockets, the earth cable won't quite reach the...

    repairing a dodgy mains cable

yeah its my main radial circuit (old house). Am i right in thinking junction boxes have different amp ratings and I need one that matches the rating of my circuit breaker?

    repairing a dodgy mains cable

Hi guys. In my cellar I've found a run of cable on my main circuit that looks like it's got a bit of a botched connection. Its seems that two cables are joined together with a mass of insulating tape. I've not looked to see if there's and connectors under the tape and I can't tell by feeling...

    recessed downlighters

Thanks guys. they are mains voltage, so there is no transformer. Cheap fitting/lamp is probably the most obvious reason that applies to me. I bought them from B&Q!

    recessed downlighters

Right... I had some downlighters put in my landing ceiling. I didn't bother in the kitchen because it was too much hassle. The problem I have is that the bulbs seems to be blowing quite often. There's 3 lights and I've already got through 4 bulbs in just a few weeks. They are mains voltage...
