To be honest that frame needs replacing. What did you ask/tell the joiner to do? If it were me and you had told me only to replace the threshold, I would had told you that the whole frame needs doing. The repair you have had done there won't last very long, it will be weak as it is not...

2x1 batons would be fine as long as you fix them through every joist above. Start around the outside of the room first making sure each baton is level with the lowest point in the existing ceiling, then fill in the middle at (I always use 400mm centers, but less is okay depending on board size)...

I have found the microswitches (see pic). It looks like they are operated via a sprung plunger by a diaphram. With heating demand only the plunger moves towards the microswitches and when both are depressed the boiler will fire and heating runs. All fine there. Now. With the heating on...

Front and side removed. Looks like its had a small leak in the past, no leaking now though. Also have just noticed that the temperature gauge is missing.

That could be said for any purchase any time, anywhere. We had a decent enough survey done, and the property was rented before so you would have thought things like the electrics would and should have been properly looked after. Sometimes you just have to trust people....

The lighting circuit does have an earth wire inside the cable but it's not connected and in most places it's been cut so short it could not be connected. I haven't traced exactly where the cables go yet but it would be my guess that they run up 3 floors through an old lath and plaster stud...
