    Extra wide architrave

A bit more work I know... Patch in the plastering first, fill and sand edges, then fit your torus arc's?

4 Wire Thermostat... Now with pictures.

I am redecorating our living room and I want to change the thermostat for something newer, something easier on the eye... There are two cables to the existing stat. It is wired from left to right earth x2, red, red (permanant live), blue, yellow wires. There is also a black wire that is...

I want to add sockets but....

Ah right. You just answered my next question. Once the RCD is fitted alongside the retrofitted MCB's will the consumer unit then be to current regs?

I want to add sockets but....

Naa, no insulation. My consumer unit does have circuit breakers but they are inserted into an older style unit, it was the type with fuse wire but we have fitted breakers in their place.

I want to add sockets but....

It is an older unit but with trip switches fitted, I think wylex. The new sockets will be part of a wall that is going to have boards and batons fitted fitted to an existing uneven stone wall. I was going to run the new cables in the void between new plasterboard and existing wall.

Moves fast here. I am happy to do the checks, I just need some acurate guidance.

I want to add sockets but....

Brill, thanks. Already checked and every socket has 2 cables to it. I want to double the sockets in the room from 4 to 8. They will not always all be used. Only 4 doubles will be in use at any one time permanantly. Should I change anything else before I add the extra sockets??

I want to add sockets but....

I was thinking 'what if more than one socket had been added in a spur'. Only the last socket would have one cable??

I want to add sockets but....

How do I know if I am adding into the ring main or an already existing spur without lifting the wooden flooring? We live in an old building and I have no doubt that over the years the electrical system has been altered. What I want to do is add a extra double socket to each corner of a room...

    confused over insulating solid walls.

The Walls here are stone, maybe 13 inches thick. We are in a top floor flat so work on the outside would be very difficult. The out side Walls (2 in this room) are very cold to touch. Wallpaper will not stay up for more than a couple of years! I was thinking damp proof membrane, then 2x2...

    confused over insulating solid walls.

I realise this is an older thread, but I was posting on the off chance the OP see it again. I am wondering if this worked well or not as I am planning to insulate our external walls with a similar method?

Please help with my central heating system.

We have been through the bills with a fine tooth comb. With the meter readings we have the bill is correct, so it looks like unfortunatly we are going to have to stump up the cash to the supplier. Which leads me back to my original question... Why is our system so inefficient? :?

The meter is Imperial, it says cubic ft on the front. What are MI's?

Please help with my central heating system.

The sight glass IS in place. Probably a poor photo, it's taken with my phone... We did have a few estimated readings. However the latest reading is correct as we are changing supplier, this latest bill is our final bill from the supplier. We have been paying £135.00 per month and we still...

Please help with my central heating system.

Thanks Picasso, I'll have a read. We have lived here for a few years now. Last years bills were significantly lower in cost, 600% lower in fact. The building is victorian. Was a hotel and is now flats, has been for decades.

So from the details I've given above can you see anything that looks untoward? Do you think we should get the meter checked or is there anything we should be checking first?

Please help with my central heating system.

During the winter months - 1hr in the morning and up to 7hrs in the evening. Longer at the weekends obviously. Room stat usually set to 18 - 20 degrees. Boiler set to maximum. (Temp gauge on the boiler does not work, dunno if that makes any difference!!) Just 2 of us live in the flat...

Please help with my central heating system.

We have just had a huge shock from our gas company. Without going into to much detail basically they say over the winter months we were using nearly £50.00 worth of gas a week!! Meter readings are correct. Now we know gas has gone up in price but this is silly. So I have to question our...
