External light fed from behind. How to feed from the surface?

Thanks for the genius replies guys, I wouldn't have thought of cutting a chase. Am I correct that it would need the cable entering from below to prevent water running down into the fitting?

External light fed from behind. How to feed from the surface?

Hi, If fitting an external wall/path light designed such that the cable enters the fitting through a hole in the backplate (ie through the wall) - is there a way to feed it via surface mounted cable instead? I thought of cable (or conduit) ideally above the light (for aesthetics since the light...

    Sky box no signal

Swap the two boxes around and check if one or other doesn't get a signal. This'll rule in/out the cabling.

    Numberplate spacing?

I don't think so. The current style is two letters, two numbers, space, then three letters. The 66 is the age identifier, so I wouldn't think you can split it up. Or those first 4 digits for that matter. The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 30mm, so it can't be...

Can an old car pass the MOT without a spare wheel

Just to add to Iamchamps advice above - having a spare wheel isn't a requirement, but if there's one fitted it must be legal.

Choosing replacement mains powered smoke/CO alarms

Thanks for the reply and the link :) The aico site reckons I should fit alarms everywhere, and that they are all singing and dancing. I think this is a bit overkill for us, but a browse around for 'non-singing/dancing' aico sensors seems to show other ranges similar to what we currently have...

Choosing replacement mains powered smoke/CO alarms

Hi, I'm looking for some guidance on choosing replacements for my two existing Firex L240C mains powered linked ionisation smoke alarms, installed around year 2000. Although they work fine, they've gone yellow and it's time to change them. One is in the downstairs hallway, the other in the...

Gas Fire Efficiency Figures ... Puzzling me

Had a living flame gas fire for about 10 years - used it all the time, loved the cosy feeling in the lounge but the rest of the house being cooler. Always wished it had a remote control. Consider getting comfy on the couch, feet up etc, just getting to grips with the movie's plot - then the...

    Uneconomic Repair

This is like waiting until next season to see whether the hero survived that explosion. Are you going to tell us, or do you want us to guess some more. I'll have a stab at £1500, £1300, £1200, £1100 and 2 grand if it helps you along.

Lots of the arctic trailers at work have LED rear lights and the mechanic reckons they fail at about the same rate as standard bulbs.

    Hot bitumen shed roof

Traditional "pour and roll" felting is where bitumen is heated in a boiler until it reaches temp (approx 220 deg), then poured (from a bucket with a spout) in front of a pre-cut and aligned strip of felt, and the felt is unrolled over the pool of hot bitumen, ensuring bitumen covers the whole...

    Gloss paint that isn’t ‘tacky’

We found water based gloss dries quickly - so quickly that the top of a door has started to set by the time you reach the bottom. Perhaps the finish isn't quite as good as the professionals can achieve with the traditional stuff but we find it perfectly good enough, and with the added bonus of...

Removing rad - do I need to blank the lockshield end?

I've recently disconnected both lockshield valves on a towel rad - they both leak slightly. You should be ok turning them off, but maybe not.

    Car warranties

Sorry for bringing the USA into the discussion, but I personally believe that someone competent enough to service their own car should be able to do so, and keep it's warranty intact - just like it seems you can in the USA (and possibly here too, according to info earlier in this thread). Lots...

Does a WB 29cdi combi need a dump rad?

Thanks again. The actual reason for the thread in the first instance is that I've temporarily isolated and removed the towel rail to repair the wall behind it. I've said to ensure that at least one radiator is fully on if the heating is being used in the meantime, but it got me thinking.
