    Under sink leak

Good evening, I have recently moved into a new house and found a leak under the sink. I have attached a picture of the problem. The smaller pipe on the right sticking up on a diagonal is 'open' and water just comes out when draining the sink. Is there a product I can stick on there to block it...

    Brick wall repair

All done. I painted all lintels too, fed up of climbing ladders! Thanks for all the advice.

    Brick wall repair

Thanks for that. Does any existing paint surface that I will be painting over need rubbing down to give a 'key' or would running over it with a wire brush be enough? My weekend ahead is planned...

    Brick wall repair

I didn't think about that, sounds a good idea. I've just been looking at trellis and will get the mother-in-law on plant duty. Thanks a lot.

    Brick wall repair

Hi I am trying to sell my house. The front garden boundaries are a bit of a mess and could do with a re-paint. They have been painted white at some point, but this looks quite messy now. Most can just be re-painted. The house is a terrace built around 1900. It has concrete lintels on the...

    Removing section of wall

Hi So as part of getting a new door I realised that the main electric supply comes into my house via the door frame. The electric board agree to move it and came to do so. However, they want to drill through the wall but cannot see where they would access indoors. They have asked for me to move...

    New sink straight through trap

Thanks. Yes it is a wash basin. I have tried method 1, using the old trap washer. I switched the washers round so the new one was on top, presumably creating the seal. Not sure if this would make a difference. However, the trap is now a lot more sturdy. The drip is less but still there, it...

    New sink straight through trap

Hi, thanks for your reply This is the part I bought today and where the water is coming from It tightens up fine but the pipe is then wobbly and I guess the reason for the problem. Is point 2 what you think would work?

    New sink straight through trap

Hi I discovered my sink was leaking from the trap and bought a new one today. I have put in the new one but it still leaks from the top and is wobbly. The one I took off was covered in putty stuff (plumbers mait?) Will I need to reapply this to get the pipe to stay in place and seal? Thanks

    New door knob

Thanks. I have bought heavy spring latches so ok on that front. That would fit with the 'builder' that renovated our house before we bought it. I have installed all new pine doors today, any experience/advice in terms of staining/varnish/waxing them?

    New door knob

Thanks again. I have gone for the option of moving the latch plate, seems the one I am less likely to cock up. Just wish I had planned this far ahead before sanding/stripping, filling and painting the frames again!

    New door knob

That's great advice, thanks. Thinking of the practicalities, will it be better to install on the cross section of the door between the panels (four panel doors) as I imagine the wood will be too thin around the panel section (if that makes sense). I am replacing doors and had intended to use the...

    New door knob

Hi I am planning on fitting new door knobs onto new internal doors. The ones I have chosen do not come with mortice tubular latches included. In terms of which size (length) to buy is it just personal preference of which to buy or is there something I am missing? Thanks

    Windowsills

Thanks for all the replies. really helpful. I have started scraping it all off, not a fun job and exactly as you predicted endecotp, using anything I can find to try!

    Windowsills

Hi I am currently redecorating and painting woodwork. I have been sanding windowsills but there is caulk around the edges which has gone a bit horrible, as shown in the pictures. What is the best way to remove this? All I have seen is silicone remover, is this necessary or is there an easier...

    Light switches

This is why this site is great, this is not something I had thought about or knew was required. Although I haven't given much thought to the job yet, its all speculative at the moment. Yes I will be doing this myself. How do I go about checking that they are earthed appropriately? I have just...

    Light switches

Hi Not strictly an electrics question but I am wanting to change the light switches in my house. They are currently just the run-of-the-mill white plastic ones. However one of my double switches sticks out from the surface with a pattress (?) box. I am wanting to replace with metal light...

    Architrave and Skirting issues

I will be going with the second option then. I'm sure I have a few bits of wood lying around which will fit and I'll just have to give it my best shot! There are also a few gaps between the architrave and the plaster on the walls (approx 5mm - 10mm max in some places) any thoughts on what to...

    Architrave and Skirting issues

Ok i will go with filler. Gerrydelasel - thanks for the link. Really helpful as I'm planning to tackle a number of skirting/architrave/molding issues JobAndKnock - just to clarify, do you mean fill the recess with wood which matches the architrave or just use a piece to fit the majority of it...

    Architrave and Skirting issues

I have now stripped this frame back to the wood. I have some linseed oil putty, is this ok to use as a filler for the small holes, scrapes and dents in the wood and then be sanded down? Or is another product better? Thanks
