    Question re supporting beam

Sorry if the timber I referred to wasn't clear, but it's the central beam which supports the valley roof. Anyway, I've spoken to my roofer and he took into account the likely need to replace this beam in the quote, so panic over.

    Question re supporting beam

Hi all I'm shortly getting a new roof on my small 2 bed terrace house with a valley roof. There's been a been a leak at the front of the house and it's hard to know for how long before I moved in water has been coming through. If, when the roof is removed, the builder finds the central...

    Help- Re-painting water damaged area

Hello I had a bad leaky roof which is in the middle of a repair. Water came in through the area around the window, also through the brickwork, which has caused damaged and bubbling paint. Once everything has fully dried out I want to re-paint the areas affected. The thing is, if I simply...

Out of interest, roughly how much would I be looking at to replace a section of ceiling, should this be necessary?

Leaky roof / sagging ceiling board

Not sure, but I'm pretty certain it's not plaster. It's quite a firm series of boards that make a kind of a hollow sound when knocked with my fist....

Leaky roof / sagging ceiling board

Hi all, Im currently in the process of dealing with a leaky roof. I'll be getting the roof replaced soon but in the meantime, with all this bad weather, I'm stuck with drip drip drip - all quite depressing. Anyway, the area of the ceiling where the leak is coming through has dropped by...

What to consider when selecting a roofer?

Thanks. I'm going to get a couple numbers of roofers who my folks know have done work for others. The father & son team who gave me a quote commented that they're not VAT registered. Is this normal for a small outfit or does that sound a bit dodgey?

What to consider when selecting a roofer?

Hi all, It appears I require a new roof and now need to select a roofer. I've had one quote so far from a father and son outfit, but I'm intending to get a couple more. The thing is, I'm not sure what I should be looking out for when selecting a roofer. Is there some kind of...

    Opinion on quote plz

Thanks for the replies so far. About the scaffolding, it's a narrow house with a valley roof so I think there's quite a lot of space up there to put stuff down and work. Apparently it's quite a wide valley. I think that's why a single tower should do the trick.

    Opinion on quote plz

Thanks. The rendering is just the walls up on the roof, not the whole house (I'm guessing u assumed that, but I didn't make it clear). At the back of the house there are some small cracks in the rendering, and I'm thinking of asking if for that price he'd be willing to fill those in for me...

    Opinion on quote plz

Hi all,   I've been having some problems with roof.  Called the roofer out and he says that ultimately a new roof is needed.  I live in a 2 bedroom terrace house in Bristol with a valley roof. The quote I've been given is £4,800.  This covers the following:   - Replacing felt, tiles and...

    Bubbling paint help

Hi all When I moved into my house there was a bad leak, which was coming in the ceiling above the window. I had the roof repaired but only got around to redecorating the room some year or two later. A few months after I repainted I noticed some of the paint above and around one side of...

    Help - mystery toilet leak!

Many thanks for the replies - very helpful. I'm not planning on dealing with this myself, i'm going to instead get my uncle over. He fitted his own bathroom and so i hope he'll be up to the task! By the way, I noticed the screws fixing the cistern to both the wall and toilet below are...

    Help - mystery toilet leak!

Hi All I have a recently discovered a mystery leak in my toilet and I'm hoping someone here might have an idea what the matter could be. Water is dripping from a butterfly screw underneath and the cistern tank (which presumably connects the tank to the toilet). The leak is not constant...

    help....dulux endurance on metal..?

Hi all I was intending to paint my hallway using Crown Easyclean Emulsion. It's meant to be a heard-wearing paint that can be scrubbed/cleaned without any problems. It also says it can be used on metal (i.e. radiators and pipes).... Anyway, my wife has now decided she wants a different...

Help please - bubbling paint problem :-(

Thanks for your reply. I'd be surprised if the problem is penertrating damp due the the proximity of the bubbling, and also the front of the house is very thick brick and has been rendered - i just can't see where any moisture would be able to get in. That said, I'm not a builder so can't be...

Help please - bubbling paint problem :-(

Hi all, A few months ago I re-decorated my bedroom. The walls around the windows had some mould as it’s a room that suffers from high moisture levels,. However, I (thought) I made sure I got rid of the mould before re-painting. Recently, to my horror, I noticed that the paint around...

    Best exterior selant for windows?

Hi, I noticed that some of the sealant between the window frame and the concrete surround (not the glass and frame) appears to be coming away. I want to re-seal, but am unsure what's the best product for the job. Does anyone have any recommendations? Would this do the trick: Link...
