    Diy house rewire

This was my problem, if I am testing and inspecting, only the LABC to pay, and you know up front the cost, if you're going to be using third party testers, there is no ceiling to the charges, if they fail anything, then they have to return to re-test, with yet another charge. The problem is...

    Understanding heating, cost v operation.

Not used the word central on purpose, as including storage radiators, open fires, etc. So the big date 1978 and the winter of discontent this changed my whole outlook on heating, never again do I want to rely on a single energy supply to my home. Be it an open fire, a gas fire, storage...

    Mira Event XS Replacement

Fitted one downstairs for my mother, the RCD supplying it tripped, and mother did not notice the drop in pressure.

I would think if certified, one should not be working as an electrician! You should know what is needed, just do it.

    Roomstat and TRV

I found a problem with mother's old house, the bay windows captured the sun in the morning, so the temperature could reach to 30°C in half an hour, so want the radiator to stop heating the room fast, so, the lower the radiator temperature, when the sun comes out, the less the room temperature...

    Roomstat and TRV

Spot on, and this is a problem if lock shield not set correct, as once the boiler does fire, the radiator can get stinking hot, before the TRV has had the time to close. Midday Saturday my eQ-3 TRV heads exercise the valve, and recalibrate themselves, and it takes around 6 minutes to fully...

    Roomstat and TRV

Depends on the TRV head, these when I got them (2019) were £15 each, this earlier model more expensive and a pain as can't adjust at the TRV, needs a computer or phone, and a hub, where first one shown can use bluetooth, but also can be manually controlled at the head. Some allow both, and...

    Roomstat and TRV

Yes, spot on, my thinking. Mother's house, hall, had a wall thermostat, and a radiator without a TRV, after trying to set the lock shield valve, and failing to get reasonable results, I decided to fit a TRV to the radiator, and it was a massive improvement. OK, few more details, hall had the...

Replacing extractor spur with timer switch

As said, items like this can allow control both timed and with voice control. But the immersion heater timer has for years combined a time switch and fuse. I must admit I would convert to a plug and socket, and use a plug in control OK, it needs a hub, but I already have the hub, and if it...

System boiler new hive v4 dual channel thermostat

Start by numbering the terminals, then try to work out what each does. 1 = Earth 2 = 3 = Thermostat 4 = Thermostat 5 = 6 = Line supply 7 = Supply to boiler 8 = Thermostat 9 = Neutral 10 = Then test to confirm, I am using motorised valve wire colours to try to work out what does what. For a...

Upstairs thermostat not triggering boiler despite showing as 'on'...

Should really start a new thread, but it is likely that you have motorised valves which have a micro switch in them, and the micro switch has failed. Normally it is the reverse, where the micro switch gets stuck in, and the boiler will not turn off. But it is not the boiler or thermostat with...

Was burning some today cold turkey event at local railway.

    Diy house rewire

Well maybe, something like shown, actually that was an early diagram, it has some relays added now. Better split side to side, then with a failure not need for extension leads up/downstairs, the load is more even, and in general less cable used, so lower loop impedance, upstairs and downstairs...

    Diy house rewire

Most complex wiring in my house, is likely the central heating, and most likely error is a supply outside, and cable routes.

    Coal in Range Boiler

We have coal where I work, but in the old coal merchant, nothing, could not get coal even if you wanted it, unless buying from a heritage railway.

    Diy house rewire

As @pete01 says, unless someone gets hurt, no one is likely to look at the wiring, and question who has done it. And once you have an EICR then, in the main, any problems, and they will look at the person raising the report. So if it follows BS 7671, no one is likely to worry about it until the...

Where on earth is my roof aerial?

I know my TV can pick up satellite direct, and satellite from the Sky box, terrestrial TV from Moel-y-sant, (freeview) and also freely, and Youtube from our broadband, and it is sometimes hard to work out which we are getting. From memory, an aerial needs to be around 9 inches, so the coax...

    Diy house rewire

I got my meters, but the loop impedance tester seems to give wrong results, but the main point is you don't want to finish a circuit, to later find there is something wrong. So you need to test circuit by circuit. Without your own test gear, this is not easy.

    Diy house rewire

The installation certificate can only be completed by persons doing the work, but an electrical installation condition report (EICR) is a very similar form, so often that form is used to report to the LABC although not waiting until the end of the job, it is done at stages through the work. The...

    Coal in Range Boiler

Coal is made from wood, but not all coal is the same, it seems the longer it is out of the ground the less volatile, and Welsh coal and Polish coal are very different. But grate size is the main thing, even hard or soft wood, needs a different grate size, this is why one hears the argument...
