    Smelly bathroom

It's been there about 8 years, and the smell has been present on and off for a year or so. There isn't a great fall, but I think it is sufficient to allow water to run off. If the fall is too shallow can this increase the syphoning problem?

    Smelly bathroom

So.....this means putting an air admittance valve at the top of each vertical pipe which feeds into the horizontal run? (I don't want to have to replace all four traps). If so, do the valves need to be higher than the highest overflow level for each appliance or will they prevent water flowing...

It turns out that inserting pics is now very easy because you can set up photobox type albums on this site. If it works, my set up should appear in this post.....

    Smelly bathroom

Each grey water feed (1)-(4) comes out of the wall horizontally and then drops downwards about a foot into a common pipe (itself horizontal but perpendicular to pipes (1)-(4)) running into the side of the waste stack. Each of pipes (1)-(4) has a stub extending upwards which has a screw on cap...

    Smelly bathroom

Thanks. The grey water wastes do all feed into the same near horizontal run into the waste stack. They do not appear to be independently vented, though each short vertical pipe into the horizontal run does have a screw cap on top. How does the top of the vented stack come off? CRT

    Smelly bathroom

Hi, we've got nasty smells coming out of the wastes, principally shower, in our bathroom. We've used drain cleaner and flushed through but the smells remain. The set up is WC waste into external stack; a couple of feet below, bath, washbasin and shower (in that orde) into the same stack. The...

    Electric door bell wiring question

Finally got round to looking at it again, and after pulling it all about and vacuuming out decades of dust discovered the fault was with the adjusting screw/switch on the bell - a couple of turns after bridging the gap with a wire from the transformer to find the fault and all sorted out.

    Stream fed irrigation

Environmental Agency website says abstraction licence is needed unless an exemption applies. One of the exemptions is if you are going to abstract less thatn 20 cubic metres (4,000 gallons) a day. Our abstraction will be less than that so we ought to be alright.

    Stream fed irrigation

We have a tiny stream alongside the garden and the previous owners had used this for watering the garden by laying a 25/30mm pipe from the stream head and then connecting a hosepipe to it (there is a drop of about 2m from the head of the stream to where the hosepipe is connected). It works well...

Number of phones on a BT line

Good. A succinct and helpful answer. Is this easy to do?

Number of phones on a BT line

Now, assuming I have one of the boosters (as I will within the 2-3 working day promised delivery time), it seems to me that I will have to connect it in such a way that it boosts the REN before the sockets which are hard wired in throughout the house. That is, I've got: - my main BT line in...

Thanks. I will see how I go and maybe try one of those gizmos.

    Electric door bell wiring question

That's helpful. So what you're suggesting, I think, is replace all the hard copper old stuff with modern, stranded wire and clean up all the contacts. Correct? What about putting a new transformer in the box?

Number of phones on a BT line

Hi, apologies if this has been asked before, but what is the maximum number of phones (corded, plugged-in, not wireless) you can put on a standard BT line? We've got a master socket in with Broadband and a number of additional sockets around the house and I'd like to put in several...

    Electric door bell wiring question

Yes it is very similiar to that though the bell and transformer is to one side. The transformer is in a 4"x2" metal box marked "GEC" and next to it the bell has an external, sprung clapper. As well as the external door bells there is a bell push in a bedroom linked to the indicator box (most...

    Electric door bell wiring question

Thanks for that. At least I am reassured on the fuses for the time being. When I'm next at the house at the end of the week I will do a diagram and take some pictures.

    Electric door bell wiring question

We have inherited with an old house an equally old GEC door bell and indicator system - 240v comes into a transformer and 4v-12v comes out the other side and then supplies an old fashioned bell and the indicator system which puts a flag up depending whether its the front or back door bell being...

Water butt diverter from old cast iron downpipe

I've got an old cast iron down pipe (5"?) which takes the rainwater down to the drain from the roof guttering. I want to connect a diverter for a water butt. What is the best way to do this given that the off the shelf diverters are narrower, metric sizes? Do I: 1. cut the pipe; and...
