had exact same problem with one of these boilers last week. I tried the venturi first which didnt solve problem , then changed CH thermistor and that cured it.
Venturi was quite tricky to remove because access to the boiler was restricted.
Plumb Center any plumbers merchants.
If i remember correctly , BandQ waste fittings are not compatible with the standard waste fittings. I think there is 2mm size difference. This may be where u are having trouble getting them to fit.
If i come across this scenario i use the flat end of my footprints. I put flat end into valve and then turn footprint body with a big spanner. If that doesnt work heat the air valve up with a blow torch first to help loosen it.
Asa rule of thumb that is correct. Its impossible to explain how tight u actually have to do it. Too tight is often as bad as not tight enough. It is one of these things that comes with experience but as u are not having any leaks i think u are doing fine
You would be better rewnewing the whole air valve assembly. You would either unscrew it with a spanner if it has an external hex , or for an older radiator you would use a radiator spanner (allen key) to spin it out.
If u turn off the cold main ur hot water will be off as well as combi is fed with mains cold water. :)
Alternatively , on the cold supply pipe going into the boiler there will be an isolating tap of some sort.
