    What's eating my rhododendrons?

Ok thanks, so is there a best way to treat them? I've found this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BugClear-Ultra-Weevil-Killer-Insecticide/dp/B0017RNZM0/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_86_lp_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5KPZKS1A30PBJCQ53JK6 and this...

    What's eating my rhododendrons?

Help, I've got a approx. 2 year old rhododendron bush in a pot in my garden, and lately have noticed something has been eating it. Can't see anything obvious like slugs or caterpillars. I'm just wondering what the best preventative action to take is? Need to be careful with what I use, I...

    Leak from solar panel pipework

Thank you both, I have emailed 4 local installers for a quote to repair and top up the system - hopefully they'll not want the £250 that Kingspan wanted! Cheers!

    Leak from solar panel pipework

Hi all, We have a solar hot water panel and one of the pipes coming from it seems to be leaking an oil-like substance, presumably thermal transfer fluid. The pressure gauge is showing zero bar, so once it's fixed it will likely need topped up. The leak is coming from a specific joint in the...

Hollow Tine Aeration and Top Dressing - good enough?

Hi all, My new build lawn was badly compacted and not looking too healthy. I had priced up hiring a hollow tine aerator (~£65 for a day) and then topdressing, but a dumpy bag of top dressing was about £80. So I contacted a local landscaper who provided me with a quote of £155. The quote they...

New build lawn - compaction, clay soil, poor drainage

Thanks for your reply. So, would you go for the horticultural grit I linked to (2nd link)? Only thing is, I was planning to top dress and overseed to improve thickness, which probably won't work too well with grit? Also, for either choice, I have no idea how much I would need - garden is 88m2...

New build lawn - compaction, clay soil, poor drainage

Grass seems to be reviving slightly even just with the scarifying and aeration carried out last week: http://imgbox.com/UY38Da9q But is still quite poor in that particular corner: http://imgbox.com/snxeM8Iw http://imgbox.com/kKEcT7yx

New build lawn - compaction, clay soil, poor drainage

Hi all, We have a newish-build house (built 2014) with a plain lawn at rear. The soil is quite heavy clay, badly compacted and I'm sure the developers put the minimum amount of topsoil down below the turf. It's in pretty bad condition after this winter, so I have descarified it (not much...

32a MCB on ring final - how come it doesn't trip?

In our house (built 2014), all the downstairs sockets are on a single ring final circuit, including all the kitchen appliances (washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave etc) My question is - there are often times (especially on a Saturday morning when laundry etc is...

    Spur off for double socket?

Thanks, The grid switch appears to be on the same circuit as all other 11 double sockets downstairs (as in the same 32a mcb isolates them) so I am assuming it is a ring? Would a 2014 newbuild ever really use a radial circuit for all downstairs sockets? What is the benefit of extending the ring...

    Spur off for double socket?

We have an 8' section of bench in the utility room which, stupidly for a house build in 2014, has no sockets. It does have the following fused switches for washer and dryer: Would it be simple enough to spur off this and put a double socket in beside it? Is it any different to spurring off...

Changing switches from 2-way to 1-way

Thanks for the replies. John - very detailed, makes sense. I was mildly surprised it worked first time! EFLImpudence - can I please ask why put the black in with the grey at both ends? I have currently terminated each end in a separate choc block.

Changing switches from 2-way to 1-way

I want to change a 2-way light switch arrangement to an ordinary 1-way, but just to be difficult it's the slave switch I want to keep. The master switch will just have a blanking plate fitted. This is exactly like the old setup: So I've used two choc blocks and joined the wires behind the...

    Plants, whats he doing wrong?

Been round to a mate's today and he's having a bad time with his garden. I've attached a few photos to show. These hanging baskets were bought a few weeks ago, he says he waters them most evenings (with water from a water butt) but they don't look healthy. I'm not sure what plant they are...

New mower - are any offset like this anymore?

Thanks John, So do most new mowers have a rear roller now, not rear wheels? I'm presuming cheaper mowers will just have rear wheels? Strangly mine has a Kawasaki motor, which I've not seen before.

New mower - are any offset like this anymore?

Hi all, my current mower is a Husqvarna Royal 53S, as shown above. Notice that part of the blade is "outside" the wheels on the left hand side (RHS of this pic), which is very useful for cutting edges of the garden without the mower falling down into the rut at the side of the flowerbeds. Do...

Which Stelrad rad - Elite or Vita Value?

    Quick question - I'm replacing a 300x1500 double rad with a 450 x 1400, and the local merchant have 2 Stelrad options: Stelrad Vita Value K2 - £75 http://www.plumbcenter.co.uk/product/stelrad-vita-value-seamtop-radiator-450mm-x-1400mm-k2 Stelrad Elite K2 - £91...

Is room taking too long to warm up?

Here's a heat loss analysis I've just done on the City Plumbing website: It's suggesting 5042 BTU/hr, or 1.48kW. I honestly have no idea what the radiator is rated at, can't see a manufacturer on it anywhere. But most 1500 x 300mm rads I've found online are around 5100 BTU...

Is room taking too long to warm up?

I think the steps are just a product of the fact I have the graphing software set up to "poll" the temperature every 5 mins, hence it is showing as steps. It's just that it's taking more than 5 mins to increase the room temp by half a degree.
