    Fitting window to detached garage

I have a spare 1200mm wide window and thought about fitting it to the back wall of our detached garage for extra light. I believe planning permission is not necessary but wonder if I have to seek building control to do the work. Can anyone confirm one way or the other? Thanks

    Paint not adhering to surface.

Thanks guys. As usual, knowledge is king - and there are a few members of royalty here :D I wrote to Zinsser. Not expecting a quick reply under the current situation I received this quite quickly endorsing your replies "Thanks for the enquiry. Unfortunately we do not know anything about the...

    Paint not adhering to surface.

I purchased some Zinsser rather than face sanding all the profile detail on the garage door - and it failed. I cleaned the garage door as directed and applied a coat of Zinsser - however after drying I find that this too peels off if you scratch it with a finger nail. So having wasted the money...

    Paint not adhering to surface.

Thanks for your feedback. As it happens I had only tried a test area on the door. After my original post I sanded off the new paint and instead of a 'light sanding' as recommended by Valspar I sanded the original paint quite heavily until the original black paint looked more grey. I washed of...

    Paint not adhering to surface.

It has been a while (about 10 years) since I had to do any exterior metal paintwork - and I am looking for some advice. We have a Garador Garage door which still has on it the original black paint applied at the factory and is about 3 years old. We decided we wanted to change the colour to...

    Locating a particular threaded die

I can get new ones on ebay (with correct thread) for similar money - but for the project I have I will still need machining done - to cut off the hook end and extend the length by adding a bar - so I will probably be just as cheap to buy suitable lengths of 1" bar and have the threads turned on...

    Locating a particular threaded die

I eventually received an e-mail back from Lexus - it said that all they could find was the attached drawing - which is confusing because it specifies the thread in metric with a pitch of 3.175 - which is non standard for metric and is equal to 8 tpi, but it also states M18 which is 1mm less...

    Locating a particular threaded die

Turns out the thread is actually Non-Metric. It is 3/4" diameter and is definitely 8G - ie 8tpi. Just waiting now for the results of some enquiries for someone to turn me the threads on bar.

    Locating a particular threaded die

Where we live it is hard enough to find decent clothes or shoes, let alone anything out of the ordinary such as anything with a thread bigger than M12. I've tried the local hardware stores and none of them have anything close to the size. That's one of the hazards of living in an area where...

    Locating a particular threaded die

Most of the machine shops in somerset are over an hour from us, but closer to home I did find a small car mechanics workshop with machining facilities who may be able to help - but they are closed for a couple of weeks. I also found a chinese seller of Lexus tow hooks on ebay. I e-mailed them...

    Locating a particular threaded die

I hear what you say - BUT Yesterday I found a forum where a guy wanted to use his tow hook bracket for a support to take the extended length for a Kayak on his roof rack, and he says he found the thread was 18 x 3. Also - have a look at the two attached photos showing callipers set to 3 threads...

    Locating a particular threaded die

    - At £50 a pop they are very expensive, at a push if I find no other solution I could try and get a couple o second hand ones - but they are still going for £15 + plus postage. - We are in West Somerset and there are no machine shops within the area :( - Those in the link only go to 12mm -...

    Locating a particular threaded die

Not really John. I cannot get a towbar for my car (only ever made in the US), so to add a Tricycle rack I need to use two long bars which are inserted into the tow bolt holes and then on to which I place a (homemade) tricycle carrier. Unfortunately the standard bolts aren't long enough. Here's...

    Locating a particular threaded die

I am trying to locate a die to cut a thread the same as that used on my cars (a Lexus) towing hook. Apparently all car manufacturers use different threads and not even the Lexus dealers can tell me what thread is used on mine. Using a caliper I have measured the thread diameter and pitch and...

Problem with combi boiler since service

Thanks for your comment. Let me see if I correctly understand the consequences of a sticking diverter valve. The diverter valve I guess is what directs the water heated by the boiler to either the hot water preheat tank or the central heating circuit, and if it was sticking, it could be that...

Problem with combi boiler since service

We have a Vaillant gas combi boiler which was in the house when we bought it from the developer in 2017. It worked fine up until late December 2019 when it would intermittently make a noise when the heating was fired up by the stat - the hot water was fine when called for by either water being...

Problem with Makita 18v Cordless drill

I understand what you are saying about the usability, but having just bought a replacement body it would be useful if I could just run the faulty one as a backup drill just for drilling.

Problem with Makita 18v Cordless drill

Thanks, I search again. In the meantime, is it possible to re-wire the drill to eliminate the variable speed and just wire the trigger straight to the brush assembly - would this work? If so I could use the drill as a backup.
