    Building guidelines

Hi, Does anyone know a good website that explains building regulations for the layman. I'm having a granny flat built in the garden and wanted a website where I could check regulations about things like depth of foundations, roof pitch, drainage, guttering and so on. Tall order, I know...

Earth wire and double insulated appliances

I have an extractor fan for the bathroom which is double insulated so doesn't require earthing. My question is what is the best thing to do with the earth wire? I've cut it back at the fan but should I still wire it in with the rest of the earth wires at the junction box or should it be cut...

    sqeaky floorboards

Another handy trick to hide the screw heads is to get a piece of dowelling which is slightly bigger than the countersunck screw hole and hammer it in a little and then use a fine saw to hack off the end that sticks out. When you sand down the floor and varnish it, you get a near perfect finish.

Plastic waste pipes - a lesson

A lesson learnt the hard way! 40mm Push fit and compression waste pipes and 40mm solvent weld waste pipes are not actually the same diameter on the outside of the pipe. So be sure you pick up the right ones! I wasted a few bob!

    Compression or capillary joints

I guess it all comes down to personal preference...having said that I've now finished all the piping in the bathroom and with that behind me I think pre-soldered joints are the best of the bunch. I found that with the compression joints, if you move them too much once you've fitted them, they...

Cutting a cast iron soil waste pipe

How on earth do you cut a cast iron waste pipe? I need to cut out the existing soil waste pipe running into the main waste pipe and replace it with a new plastic one as I'm moving the toilet. Please help! Thanks.

    Compression or capillary joints

Hope there's a plumbing expert out there who can help! I've heard that compression joints shouldn't be used underneath floorboards or where they can't be reached easily as they aren't as reliable as capillary joints. Is this true? I've used loads of compression joints fitting a new bath...

Fused consumer unit v MCB unit

If you do decide to go for the MCB set up, you might want to consider a split RCD fusebox. RCD stands for residual current device and detects earth leakage. Basically it trips a lot quicker than your basic MCB fuse and is normally used to protect socket circuits, cookers, electric showers...

Hi, Does anyone know if it's possible to stain or varnish MDF and get a good finish. I'm building a wardrobe out of MDF but want to keep a varnished or stained appearance so didn't want to paint the MDF. Thanks for any help. Tin.
