Decorating today, then now all power gone to kitchen area

You may well have tripped the RCD when taking off the socket fronts -all it takes is neutral and earth to touch. It will trip even if the circuit breaker is switched off.

    Average lamp life 2D 38W

thanks folks for replies - very helpful esp the IET discussion The light fittings were there already and are emergency ones so I think I might suggest setting all the electronic timer switches to 20 mins to see if this helps. I think that at night though the lights will be switched on any...

    Average lamp life 2D 38W

I realise it will all depends, but is 20 months not very long?? I'm buying branded lampss The lights are fitted in a communal stairway with time switches. The stairs have natural light so the lights aren't required all the time. 7 lights, 5 switches, 8 flats on 3 floors Any thoughts...

    Multiple socket's options

I would certainly not try to do option 3 - shoving 3 ring circuits (6 cables) into 1 circuit breaker is not good practice - in fact doubling up as you have already got isn't either, but I guess someone's added a circuit to a board with no spare ways so shifted the one of the rings to share...

Domestic infra red wall heater WITHOUT pullcord - any ideas?

Ricicle That's very interesting. So in your opinion fan heaters would be the most suitable and effective way to heat in this situation? But something chunky like this? http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/BN830.html Rather than what the budget is pitched at...

Domestic infra red wall heater WITHOUT pullcord - any ideas?

Hi ricicle Thanks for taking the time to check. I like the heaters, but I think a bit out of clients price range! I didn't realise that about infra red heaters - do'h... it was a long time ago that I studied physics can't you tell! The other option then would be a fan heater, but I'm...

    Good House Electrical Book?

Seriously, I would find your electrician sooner rather than later as they will need to be OK with you doing some of the work yourself. Certificates ask an electrician to sign off on the Design, Installation and Testing of the work, so I can't see you're going to save much £ designing it yourself...

    Good House Electrical Book?

Why not ask an electrician to advise you? After all you'll be wanting him/her to sign off all your work won't you?

    Mk Grid Switches...

If you're using metal back boxes make sure they sit a mm or two below the finished surface. If you're using dry lining boxes you may need to nibble bits out so the plate sits OK. Or maybe try one of these http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/MTFDLB1.html SB

Domestic infra red wall heater WITHOUT pullcord - any ideas?

Indeed not too far off for me.... although I can't be doing with all that God stuff, personally

Domestic infra red wall heater WITHOUT pullcord - any ideas?

No not really John - although the 2kW one are activated by pull cord which allows you to chose 1 or 2 bars.... so this option would be bypassed... I think an on/off switch would suffice as they are switched on just as church service coming to an end (when all the old dears need a wee!) so a...

Domestic infra red wall heater WITHOUT pullcord - any ideas?

Hi folks I need something like this http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/DXIRX200N.html But controllable with a switch I've had a search but all seem to be pullcord :( The heaters are for toilets in a church. I did think about bathroom fan heaters but these are a bit more...

    Lack of Earth

I agree with Spark123. But also please check with the other people in the flats and make them aware of the problem in case it might affect them too. Also the more of you that complain to the landlord and council, the quicker the action might be

Turning a shower fan on with a dimmer switch

John - the fan get it's s'l from the light switch (ie before it's dimmed but after it's switched on IYKWIM), so yes, the 3 core to the fan would need to come from the switch not the light

Turning a shower fan on with a dimmer switch

Yes but if the lights are switched on in a 'dimmed' position, then the fan won't be getting enough voltage and will eventually give up the ghost... You can get dimmers which have a dual output (not sure if this is the right term), ie when the lights are switched on it triggers the fan at full...

    Downlight / Joists Question

Contrary to popular belief, LED's still do get pretty warm. And what happens when they get changed back to halogens? I think you'll find all halogens have the distance from joist proviso Surely not every single light is bang on a joist??? Terrible planning by previous spark...

Twin and Earth into flush light fitting

What I would do is use a junction box to make the connections and then run a single length of 3 core flex into the light - this will be much easier to deal with. As the light is quite big, you can make a hole in the ceiling behind it so that the junction box will sit in the ceiling and cover...

    Downlight / Joists Question

in a word - NO I've seen the damage that a halogen light next to a joist can do - scorching, burning.... You''ll need to relocate and make good the old holes, sorry BUT be happy in the knowledge that you've made a huge improvement and are a much better electrician than the plonker who...
